BMW Motorrad: Automated Shift Assistant (ASA) System
According to the company, the Automated Shift Assistant is designed with a clever functional layout, featuring two electromechanical actuators. These actuators automate both the clutch engagement and gearshift processes of the six-speed transmission, setting it apart from manual gearshift assistants.
When the rider initiates action using the regular foot-operated gearshift lever, a signal is sent to the control unit. Simultaneously, another sensor constantly monitors two crucial factors: the engine's speed and the position of the clutch system. This information is then relayed to the Transmission Control Unit (TCU), which acts as the brain of the system. The TCU is connected to both the engine control unit and the clutch. When you want to shift, it utilizes all this information to smoothly engage or disengage the clutch and change gears.

BMW Motorrad: Two Shift Modes
In the 'M' shift mode, which is manual, gear changes can still be made using foot controls, giving the rider full control. According to BMW, in this mode, if the engine speed is within the acceptable range for the desired gear, the shift occurs smoothly. However, if the engine speed drops too low for the selected gear, the system automatically downshifts to prevent the engine from stalling. In the 'D' shift mode, the Automatic Shift Assistant truly shines. Shift points are automatically selected by the engine control unit.
BMW Motorrad: Which Model Will Incorporate This Feature?
While the company has not yet revealed which models will receive this ASA system, it is expected that Automatic BMW Bikes will soon be introduced in the international market. Although not confirmed, models like the R 1300 GS and R 1250 GS Adventure are expected to feature this ASA system. Following this, there is a possibility that this feature will be incorporated into BMW bike models available in India.
