The KTM Duke 250 is one of the best quarter-liter naked sports bikes in India. Its engine is refined with fast performance, and the list of features is enough to put the bikes of double the cost to the same. However, it is priced at a premium, where you can easily get bigger engine bikes that offer almost double the performance of it.

    • Most refined engine in the Duke series of models
    • Powerful & fast performance overall
    • Design is funky & modern with youthful appeal
    • Braking power is very powerful
    • Ride & handling combo is well tuned for enthusiasts
  • Features that could have been better

    • Mid-range vibrations from engine are still present
    • Aggressive riding position is not suited to all
    • Pricey when compared to the rivals

Should I buy the 250 Duke?

The KTM Duke 250 is punch-packed pocket-rocket naked sports bike. It is based on the design theme of the Duke 390 but with a less powerful engine. The 250 Duke also happens to offer the most refined & linear engine in the whole of Duke series. It is one of the best all-rounder bikes in this segment. We recommend it to the buyers who want a sensible combination of performance, refinement, & fuel economy with a big bike feel. It is a much cheaper option than the Duke 390 at a sacrifice of a few features & less power.

Design, Comfort, & Quality 8
  • The Duke 250 is designed similarly to the Duke 390. It carries a similar aggressive streetfighter-naked design as the 390. The new Duke 250 has sharp fuel tank extensions, a new LED headlight, and a new fuel tank design. The overall enhancements have made its road presence more recognizable than the outgoing model. It looks sharp, aggressive, and youthful in design and styling.
  • Due to its naked sports bike riding posture, it is not a very comfortable bike. With that said, short city commutes feel comfortable due to their lightweight and easy handling. But, if your commutes are long or you plan a long ride on it; the hard seat and the upright riding position will make you tired frequently. The 800mm seat height is helpful for short riders to control the bike in the city.
  • The quality of the Duke 250 is typical KTM. There are no panels gaps, the plastic used is of higher grade, & it feels premium from every angle. But, there are some areas that require improvement in terms of quality. For example, the switchgear doesn’t feel very sturdy & so does the tail section underneath the taillight.
Hardware 9

There have been substantial changes, which include the introduction of a new steel trellis frame, an off-set monoshock, a redesigned swingarm, lighter 17-inch alloy wheels, and enhanced brakes. The latest Duke 250 showcases a fresh, curved lightweight swingarm that seamlessly accommodates the right off-set rear mono-shock. It features an entirely new steel trellis primary frame paired with a pressure die-cast aluminum subframe. The adoption of a two-piece frame, redesigned wheels, and brake discs has been carefully engineered to achieve significant weight reduction across all models. These improvements have resulted in the Gen-3 KTM DUKEs achieving their highest-ever power-to-weight ratio. Moreover, the traditional steel subframe from the previous model has been substituted with a cast aluminum design. Despite its more delicate appearance compared to its predecessor, the new chassis is claimed to offer improved torsional rigidity, thereby enhancing rider feedback.

Summary

The updated hardware in the Duke 250 has not only reduced its weight but also enhanced its performance orientation.

Engine Performance & Fuel Economy 8
  • The engine performance of the Duke 250 is by far the most refined in the whole Duke series of bikes. It is the most refined KTM engine on sale in India. We love its low-end torque and mid-range power. There is ample power in it to overtake the traffic in any type of condition. Also, the mid-range is the most useful of it, thus making it tour-friendly. Moreover, the vibrations on it are well controlled, and the heat management is also very good.
  • There is a slight buzz on the handlebar and the footpegs that can be felt in the mid-range. But it is not as temperate as the Duke 390. Also, due to its lower heating, it can be used easily inside the city.
  • The fuel economy of the Duke 250 is neither great nor bad. In our tests, it returned a fuel economy of upwards 30 kmpl inside the city. This was with hard acceleration and repeated braking. Hence, if ridden sedately, it can easily deliver more than 40 kmpl.
Ride Quality, Handling, & Braking 9
  • KTM has equipped the new Duke 250 with 43mm WP Apex USD forks at the front and a preload adjustable monoshock at the rear. The suspension tuning is on the stiffer side. It means that the bike remains composed and confident on tarmac but feels bouncy on bad roads. The rough patches also travel on the handlebar, but they do not hinder balance or confidence. Being a naked sports bike, the suspension setup could’ve been better for the Indian roads. Although the faster you go, the smoother its ride gets.
  • Contrary to the ride quality, the handling of the Duke 250 is unmatched. It is very agile and sharp, provoking a lot of confidence in the rider to go fast. All thanks to its lightweight and stiff suspension.
  • KTM has recently updated it with bigger brakes. The new calipers and bigger disc brakes (320mm front and 240mm rear) make it one of the sharpest brake-equipped bikes. The brakes inspire a lot of confidence and also help in staying safe during high-speed emergency braking conditions.
Features & Safety 8
  • Just like any other KTM bike, it is also feature-loaded. It gets a 5-inch TFT display that has turn-by-turn navigation, tripmeter, odometer, tachometer, fuel economy display, gear position indicator, etc. It gets LED lights, and there is also SuperMoto ABS, via which the rear ABS can be turned off. The new bike has the same alloys as the Duke 390, and the switchgear is also new. It also has music controls along with smartphone connectivity.
  • In terms of safety, it gets a slipper assist clutch, dual-channel ABS, and bigger disc brakes from the Duke 390. KTM also offers cornering ABS as standard on it, which helps maintain stability during emergency braking on curves or corners.

While the TVS Apache RTR 310 has a bigger engine than the Duke 250, both bikes are rivals due to the similar price bracket. The base variant of the Apache RTR 310 is hardly a few thousand costly than the Duke 250. It offers more punch, better performance, & laods of features. Out of the two, our easy pick is the Apache RTR 310 as it is better value for money in every sense. It also has more colour options and customization options.

The Husqvarna Svartpilen 250 is essentially the Duke 250 but with different clothes. Yes, both of these bikes are similar underneath the design. Both of these are powered via the same engine. However, Husqvarna has found less buyers due to its radical design. Also, the Husqvarna looks smaller on the road than the Duke 250. Out of the two, we recommend the Duke 250 due to its better ride, sharp handling, & popular design.
