The Maruti Suzuki Celerio is a good family hatchback. It has comfy seats, a great cabin, and a thrifty petrol engine. The fuel efficiency is top-class in its segment and the CNG option is the cherry on top. The build quality is decent. The competition offers a stronger build and more safety features. But, the Celerio is a great car to consider if you want something different from Wagon R and Swift.

Variant Recommendation

author
The Maruti Suzuki Celerio is available in 4 variants on offer. It offers a single variant for the CNG option and has separate variants for AGS i.e. for AMT transmission on offer. So if you are planning for the regular version with manual transmission, then, we recommend the VXI variant if you are a little tight on budget. You can upgrade to the ZXI variant as well which will include a bit more features on its sleeves. If you are planning to go for the CNG variant, then it is only available with the VXI variant. If you are opting for the AGS variant, then we would recommend opting for the ZXI variant will be a better option over the VXI variant. The VXI variant is best for budget-conscious buyers. The ZXI variant offers the best value deal.

Pros & Cons of Maruti Celerio

  • Features we admire in this car

    • It is a perfect city hatchback. It has a good, reliable petrol engine with manual and AMT transmission.
    • The car has great features. These include push button start/stop, a 9” Smartplay infotainment system, hill hold assist, and more.
    • Has great seating comfort with practical boot space for your luggage.
    • The company-fitted CNG option makes it much safer. It also has great fuel efficiency.
    • Has decent interiors with a black cabin giving a robust ambiance.
  • Features that could have been better

    • It has a frugal 3-cylinder petrol engine which has evident vibrations in the interiors.
    • The fit-finish of the interiors could have been improved, competitors offer better ambiance
    • High-speed stability is quite underconfident.
    • Could have been added with more safety features.

Should I buy the Celerio?

The Maruti Suzuki Celerio is a great family hatchback. It has great comfort, a nice feel, and good features. Though it has a robust build it could have been improved seeing the competition in the segment. It has good comfortable seats on offer and the frugal petrol engine on offer has good fuel efficiency as well. If you wish to look for another option, then you might consider the Hyundai Grand I10 Nios, Tata Tiago, or the Swift in the segment.

Good-looking Design Language With Good Aesthetics 7
  • The design of the Celerio is quite appealing over its predecessor. The subtle presence of chrome in the front enhances the premium appearance. The halogen setup for the headlights gives a basic treatment and has a decent throw at night. The competition offers a better setup for the headlights. The black theme on the bumper helps to reduce the visual bulk and gives a good face.
  • Coming to the side, it has 15” alloy wheels in the ZXI+ variant, and the lower variants have 14” steel wheels with wheel covers. It has some cuts and creases that enhance the premium aesthetics. The door handles are now old-schooled but get request buttons for the passive entry.
  • At the rear, it has a similar design to that of the front. The taillamps are halogen units but it has a similar design to the headlights. The rear is plain and basic and has decent boot space for your luggage. Overall, it has simple style. It stays simple to keep down the cost of the vehicle.
Simple Interiors With Good Features On Offer 7
  • As we step inside the Celerio, the interiors are all-new fresh, and have a simplistic layout. The space is well managed and the cabin practicality is on to the mark. The fit-finish quality of the dashboard is decent. There are many hard plastics present.
  • The car has some quirky button placement. For example, the front power window controls are in the dashboard's center console. They are with the car lock/unlock button.
  • The steering wheel is the same unit as the Wagon R. The 9” Smartplay infotainment system is slick to use. It has wired connectivity for Apple Carplay and Android Auto. The dashboard is neat with silver accents. The manual air conditioning could have been updated to automatic control.
Frugal Petrol Engine With Great Fuel Efficiency 8
  • The Maruti Suzuki Celerio has the same petrol engine as the S-Presso, Wagon R, and Alto K10. It is the same 1.0 L K10C inline 3-cylinder petrol engine that has powered Maruti Suzuki vehicles for more than a decade.
  • Talking about the specifications, this 1L motor churns out 68 BHP and 96 Nm of peak torque. This motor is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and an AMT transmission.
  • This motor comes with a CNG option as well which produces 54 BHP of output and 72 Nm of torque. This configuration is extremely fuel-efficient and has an efficiency of approximately 30-32 km/KG.
  • The motor is decently refined and has a decent grunt on offer. It is not meant for high speeds and low-speed rides are pretty comfortable. The engine has some vibrations and noise that get filtered in the cabin.
  • The petrol engine has a claimed fuel efficiency of 26 km/L. In the city, it will get about 22-24 km/L, depending on driving conditions.
Good Seating Comfort Well Tuned Suspension 8
  • Coming to seating comfort the Maruti Suzuki Celerio offers a comfortable space to be in. It has a good seat cushioning in the front but the fixed headrests take away the joy.
  • The rear seats offer good space. There is great knee room, and leg room on offer and the cabin is decently wide for 3 passengers. However, it could have been added with rear AC vents to add more comfort for the rear passengers.
  • The suspension of the Celerio is tuned on the softer side. It absorbs bumps and potholes very well but there is some body roll that is felt on corners. At high speeds, the ride becomes a bit bouncy, and bad roads and expansion joints filter inside the cabin.
  • The steering wheel is very light and feels vague at times. It could have been added with more weight to provide more stability and feedback. The wheels are also a bit slim in profile and upgrading them would increase the stability.

Maruti Celerio vs Tata Tiago

The Tata Tiago is a strong contender for this category. It has a strong platform and this has resulted in scoring 4 stars in the GLOBAL-NCAP crash test safety rating. Considering the engine performance, Tiago and Celerio both offer a 3-cylinder petrol engine. Tiago's engine has more displacement, but it also has clear vibrations in the cabin. In terms of interior ambiance and comfort, Celerio has an edge. It offers more practicality and space. Looking at the listed features, Tiago stands out. It has amazing offerings. These include automatic climate control, auto-headlamps, and wipers, and an all-digital instrument cluster. In summary, Tiago presents a superior choice compared to the Celerio.

Maruti Celerio vs Hyundai Grand i10 Nios

The Grand I10 Nios is a very strong competitor to the Celerio. Both offer great value-for-money deals but there are some major differences between the two. Talking about engines, the Grand I10 Nios has a 1.2L 4-cylinder engine. It is smooth and refined. This is unlike the Celerios 3-cylinder engine, which has some vibrations in the cabin. In terms of cabin ambiance and experience, the Grand I10 Nios feels much better to be in. The dual-tone treatment of the dashboard gives it a fresh look. In terms of safety features, the Grand I10 Nios now has 6 airbags as standard across all variants. The Celerio has only dual airbags. The Grand i10 Nios has more value-for-money features. It has the upper hand over the Celerio. It has automatic climate control. It has wireless charging, and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay in both vehicles.
