2020 Yamaha R15 V3 BS6 First Look Review - India's Best Entry-level Super Sports Bike!

Update - 20/04/2021 - Yamaha R15 is the best looking sporty motorcycle in the segment so here is our first look review of the two wheeler. The prices for the same starts from Rs 1.52 lakh and fetches till Rs 1.55 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi.

The Yamaha R15 is one of the most Iconic Motorcycles in the Indian Motoring History. It was first launched in India in the year 2008 and since then it has been a benchmark in the entry-level super-sports category. Around a decade back, it was the only motorcycle in its class with top-notch hardware and features. Currently, the R15 is in its third-generation avatar. The Yamaha R15 V3 was launched at the 2018 Auto Expo and at the show floor, it astounded everyone. This motorcycle is often regarded as an affordable 'Dhoom Bike' and recently it got the BS6 update. So, today we have for you the First Look Review of the new 2020 Yamaha R15 V3 BS6.

The Yamaha R15 V3 is an entry-level fully-faired motorcycle from the Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer in India. It slots in above the MT 15 & FZ 25 and sits below the Superbike range in Yamaha's India line-up. Also, let me give you a quick minutia about the history of the R15 in India. So, the Yamaha R15 was first launched in India in 2008. The R15 V2 made its debut in 2011 and carried forward the legacy of the R15 brand. Fast forward to 2018, the R15 V3 was introduced and it redefined the sports bike segment in India. In 2019, it got a new colour variant and dual-channel ABS was introduced. And now in 2020, the BS6-compliant R15 V3 has been launched.

The Yamaha R15 V3 looks splendidly awesome. Upfront, it gets twin LED headlamps, a short visor, rear-view mirrors mounted on the body panels and more. The side profile is very striking as it gets a fully-faired body with attractive graphics and funky colours. At the rear, it gets a LED taillamp. Moreover, its leaned seating position will definitely offer you exhilarating riding experience. So, in a nutshell, we can say that it features an aerodynamic design language, sharp aggressive eyes, muscular fuel-tank and the overall design will surely impel you to gaze it in wonderment.

Talking about dimensions, the R15 V3 measures 1990 mm in length, 725 mm in width and 1135 mm in height. It has a wheelbase of 1325 mm and the saddle height (seat-height) stands at 815 mm. Mind you, this motorcycle isnt very comfortable for short riders. The motorcycle weighs around 142 kilograms (with oil and a full fuel tank) and has a fuel tank capacity of 11-litres. Also, it has a minimum ground clearance of 170 mm, which is very impressive by sports bike standards. The new R15 V3 BS6 is available in three colour variants  Racing Blue, Thunder Grey and Dark Knight.

The new 2020 Yamaha R15 V3 is powered by a BS6-compliant 155cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected engine. This motor churns out 18.6 PS of maximum power at 10000 RPM and 14.1 Nm of peak torque at 8500 RPM. The engine comes coupled to a 6-speed manual gearbox. The R15 V3 also gets Yamaha's VVA or Variable Valve Actuation technology. This high-performance VVA system provides torque for ease of use even at low RPMs. It ensures that a good amount of power and torque is present throughout the entire rev range. The R15 V3 delivers a decent mileage of around 40-45 kmpl.

The 2020 Yamaha R15 V3 is based on a deltabox frame and it also gets an aluminium swingarm. The motorcycle gets telescopic forks at the front and a mono-shock absorber at the rear. The R15 V3 runs on 17-inch tubeless tyres. The front tyre measures 100/80-17 while the rear one is a 140/70 section 17-inch unit. It is worth mentioning that the rear tyre of the R15 is a radial unit which offers superb grip and aids in handling characteristics of the bike.

The braking duties are handled by disc brakes at both the ends. At the front, it gets a 282 mm disc while the rear one is a 220 mm disc unit. It also gets a dual-channel anti-lock braking system (ABS) as standard as an additional safety aid. The R15 V3 features an all-digital instrument cluster loaded with a ton of information. It displays digital speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, twin trip meters and even a gear position indicator. It also boasts of an assist & slipper clutch, which is a very useful safety feature.

The 2020 Yamaha R15 V3 BS6 is available in only one variant but multiple colour options. The Thunder Grey colour variant of the R15 V3 is priced at Rs. 1,45,800, Racing Blue colour variant is priced at Rs. 1,46,900 and the Dark Knight variant is priced at Rs. 1,47,900. All prices stick to Ex-showroom Delhi. It rivals against the KTM RC 125, Bajaj Pulsar RS 200, Suzuki Gixxer SF, etc. Talking about the verdict, so if you want a fully-faired feature-loaded motorcycle with punchy performance, gobsmacking looks at an affordable price, then you should definitely consider buying the Yamaha R15 V3.
