Variant Recommendation
Opting for the base 2.8-L 2WD Petrol MT variant is not advisable due to its fuel inefficiency. However, if you prefer the 2WD Petrol, it's better to go for the AT variant, especially if your usage is low. The 2WD Diesel MT is a good choice for those who prefer a chauffeur-driven experience. If you plan to drive yourself and don't intend to go off-roading, the 2WD Diesel AT is a suitable option. For off-road enthusiasts, the 4WD Diesel MT variant is recommended as it provides more control during off-road adventures. On the other hand, if you primarily drive on highways, the 4WD Diesel AT variant is a better choice, offering a more relaxed driving experience. As for the Legender & GR-S variant, it comes with a higher price tag and is not recommended as it doesn't offer good value for money.
Pros & Cons of Toyota Fortuner
Should I buy the Fortuner?
The Toyota Fortuner is renowned for its robust engines and tough appearance, supported by Toyota's well-established reliability and affordable maintenance. While it may lack some modern feel-good features, it excels in capabilities. If you're someone who appreciates modern amenities, the MG Gloster is a suitable alternative. It not only boasts a sturdy design but also comes loaded with a variety of contemporary features, enhancing the overall appeal of the SUV.
- The Toyota Fortuner boasts a commanding presence on the road, characterized by its imposing stance. The front profile features a substantial grille, retaining the U-shaped chrome treatment that elegantly extends into the headlights. The headlights themselves are equipped with a projector setup and LED daytime running lights (DRL). The bumper design has been updated, incorporating a faux skid plate to infuse a sporty character into the Fortuner's appearance.
- The side profile remains largely unchanged, but the 4x4 variants now sport new 18-inch alloy wheels, while the 2WD units come with 17-inch wheels. Moving to the rear, the most noticeable change is the introduction of a fresh pair of LED taillights. Chrome accents enhance various parts of the vehicle, including the grille, door handles, lower window lines, and the strip connecting the taillights, adorned with the Fortuner badging.
- Choosing the Legender variant introduces a distinct grille design with a more aggressive appearance, quad-LED headlights, sequential turn indicators reminiscent of premium cars, an updated fog light housing, a fresh design for the alloy wheels, and an eye-catching dual-tone treatment.
- The Fortuner's interior offers ample space and comfortable seating. The cabin design maintains its previous layout. Notably, Toyota maintains the bench-type setup for the middle row, choosing not to provide captain seats. However, the bench configuration ensures generous space, providing comfort during extended journeys. Adequate under-thigh support and good legroom add to the overall comfort. The convenience features include a center armrest with cup holders, and roof-mounted AC vents are retained for optimal ventilation.
- Moving to the third row is easy; you simply need to tumble down and slide forward in the second-row seats. However, it's more suitable for children than adults. Extended journeys might become tiring because of the limited under-thigh support and shoulder space.
- In terms of features, it comes equipped with front ventilated seats and electrically adjustable front seats. The 8.0-inch touchscreen provides modern connectivity options such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, although some might desire a larger screen size. Additional features encompass connected car technology with geofencing and real-time tracking, along with an 11-speaker JBL sound system.
- For the top-of-the-line Legender variant, there are added amenities like wireless charging, ambient lighting, and dual-tone black and maroon upholstery, lending a premium touch. However, it lacks 4WD capability, which may be a crucial feature for some users.
- The Toyota Fortuner comes with two engine choices: a 2.7L petrol and a more preferred 2.8L diesel by buyers. The petrol engine produces a robust 164 bhp of power and 245 Nm of peak torque. It is available with a standard 5-speed manual transmission and an optional 6-speed automatic unit.
- On the other hand, the diesel engine is a powerful 2.8L unit generating 201 bhp of maximum power and a peak torque of 420 Nm (MT) and 500 Nm (AT). The Fortuner offers both 2WD and 4WD options, with the latter exclusively featuring the diesel engine. The automatic variant, in particular, stands out with a peak torque of 500 Nm. Both engines deliver refined performance, and the AT variants provide a smoother driving experience in the city and on the highway.
- The Fortuner's low-end torque, quick shifting, and consistent power delivery make it an energetic performer considering its size and weight. The diesel engine features three driving modes: Eco, Normal, and Sports, while the petrol version offers Eco and Power modes, allowing users to tailor the power delivery to their driving preferences.
- The Fortuner is constructed on a body-on-frame chassis, and it's important to note the considerable body roll experienced by occupants. When navigating corners, it's advisable to plan turns in advance and drive the SUV at a slower pace to ensure the comfort of rear passengers. Over the years, the Fortuner's suspension has undergone improvements, making it better suited to the conditions of Indian roads.
- While the Fortuner adeptly evens out potholes and rough patches, there is a noticeable sense of bounciness in the last row when traversing challenging road surfaces. The steering, responsive for a full-sized SUV, can feel a bit heavy, especially during low-speed city driving.
