Cheapest Electric Cars Available With Battery As A Service In India

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Lower upfront cost: EV prices start from under Rs 5 lakh with BaaS
  • Battery rental ranges between Rs 2.5 and Rs 4.5 per km
  • Ideal for city users and moderate daily driving needs

What if you could buy an electric car without paying for its most expensive part? For years, the high cost of batteries has been the biggest roadblock in Indias EV revolution. Instead of purchasing the battery along with the car, buyers can now pay only for the vehicle and subscribe to the battery separately, often on a per-kilometre basis. The result? A dramatically lower ex-showroom price, reduced financial risk, and a more flexible way to own an EV. So, here's a list of electric cars that offer Battery as a service. MG Comet EV

The MG Comet EV is one of the most affordable BaaS-enabled electric cars in India, aimed squarely at urban commuters and first-time EV buyers. With battery-excluded pricing starting around Rs 4.99 lakh ex-showroom, the car's list price drops by roughly Rs 2 lakh compared with the all-in price. Under the BaaS scheme, owners pay a battery rental based on usage, typically around Rs 2.5- Rs 3.1 per km. This makes the Comet easy to buy for city commuters who drive short distances daily, while keeping the monthly cost tied to actual battery use rather than a large upfront battery purchase.

Tata Punch EV

Tata has recently launched the facelift of the Punch EV, priced at Rs 6.49 lakh, with an additional Rs 2.6 per km. Meanwhile, without the BaaS scheme, this EV comes at a price tag of Rs 9.69 lakh (ex-showroom) and goes upto Rs 12.59 lakh (ex-showroom). Apart from this, Punch EV now boasts bigger battery packs, 30kWh and 40 kWh, which give out a claimed range of 370km and 468km.

MG Windsor EV

MG has introduced the Windsor EV with a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) option, bringing its starting price down to Rs 9.99 lakh, along with an additional Rs 3.9 per km towards battery usage. Meanwhile, without opting for the BaaS scheme, the Windsor EV is priced from around Rs 14 lakh (ex-showroom) to approximately Rs 16 lakh (ex-showroom), depending on the variant. The Windsor EV is offered with a 38 kWh battery pack, delivering a claimed range of around 331 km. It comes equipped with features such as a large touchscreen infotainment system, connected car technology, multiple airbags, and fast-charging capability, making it a well-rounded electric offering in the mid-size segment.

Maruti eVitara

Maruti Suzuki has launched the e-Vitara, its first all-electric offering and a major step from India's leading car manufacturer into the EV space. Under the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) scheme, the e-Vitara is priced from Rs 10.99 lakh, with an additional Rs 3.99 per km charged towards battery usage. Meanwhile, without opting for the BaaS model, the e-Vitara comes at a starting price of around Rs 16.49 lakh (ex-showroom) and goes up to approximately Rs 19 lakh (ex-showroom) depending on the variant. The electric SUV is offered with 49 kWh and 61 kWh battery pack options, delivering a claimed range of up to over 500 km on a full charge. With Marutis wide dealership network, SUV styling, and practical cabin space, the e-Vitara aims to make EV ownership more accessible while offering flexibility in battery payments.

MG ZS EV

MG is also offering the ZS EV with a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) option, bringing its starting price down to Rs 13 lakh, along with an additional Rs 4.5 per km towards battery usage. Meanwhile, without opting for the BaaS scheme, the ZS EV is priced from around Rs 18.98 lakh (ex-showroom) and goes up to approximately Rs 25 lakh (ex-showroom) depending on the variant. The ZS EV comes equipped with a 50.3 kWh battery pack, delivering a claimed range of around 461 km (ARAI) on a full charge. Positioned as a premium electric SUV, it offers features such as a large touchscreen infotainment system, panoramic sunroof, connected car tech, Level 2 ADAS, and multiple airbags, making it a feature-rich option for buyers looking for a spacious EV with flexible battery payment plans.

Verdict

Battery-as-a-Service is clearly emerging as a practical solution to one of the biggest barriers in EV adoption, the high upfront cost. By separating the battery price from the vehicle, brands like MG, Tata and Maruti Suzuki are making electric cars far more accessible across segments, from compact city commuters to premium SUVs. However, while the entry price drops significantly, buyers must carefully calculate long-term running costs based on their monthly driving. For low-to-moderate users, BaaS can be a smart financial move. For high-mileage drivers, a full purchase may still make more sense. Either way, BaaS has added a new layer of flexibility to EV ownership in India.
