Reasons For Steering Wheel Vibration - Check All Details!

Modern vehicles use highly complex and sophisticated mechanicals which are often extremely difficult to troubleshoot. However, on the plus side, these components have increased the overall refinement and have also improved the NVH levels inside the cabin. In such cases, even the slight of the vibrations are easily noticed by the driver. One of the first places where you are likely to observe vibrations is on the steering wheel of the vehicle. The steering wheel has a tendency to shake at both high as well as low speeds if there is a loose connection persisting in between the steering wheel and other systems connected to it in one form or the other. With this being said, what are the possible reasons for steering wheel vibration? Read on to find it out.

Following are the major reasons which are commonly responsible for vibrations creeping in the steering wheel while driving:-
1. Loose wheel bearings and tie rod ends  While the wheel bearings usually last much longer than most of the other mechanical components, they tend to lose due to excessive wear after a certain period of time. Also, the tie rods and ball joints too can loosen up which can cause shaking of the steering wheel, especially while making a turn.
2. Improper wheel balancing  One of the most common and frequent causes behind vibrations in the steering wheel is improper wheel balancing. In addition to it, if the air pressure in the tires, as well as treads of the tires, is also not uniform, it can also create an imbalance among the tires.

3. Loose engine mountings  If the mounting points of the engine on the frame of the vehicle are loose or broken, the vibrations caused by the engine can be transferred to other components of the car, including the steering wheel.
4. Broken axle  This usually happens when a car meets an accident, post which the axle might remain unrepaired. In such a case, the concerned axle will continue shaking contrary to its regular movement, which will cause vibrations in the steering wheel, especially at lower speeds.

5. Loose brakes  If the brake pedal is loose or the brake rotor is damaged or bent, the steering wheel will start vibrating as soon as you apply the brakes of your car. The wear and tear of brake callipers too can cause vibrations in some instances.
