Should You Buy An EV If You Have High Mileage On The Road?

Automotive manufacturers in India are certainly taking a step ahead to contribute to the initiative of sustainable mobility and developing electric vehicles. Electric vehicles can price to be a value proposition in terms of running costs and low maintenance. However, people are often worried about the high mileage of an EV. High mileage internal combustion engine vehicles require just a few components to be replaced, which would cost lesser than the cost of a battery pack. So, should you choose an EV for High Mileage runs? Here we are with this detailed guide to pull you out of this dilemma.

A battery pack is the most crucial component in a vehicle, and it comes at a premium too. The prices of battery packs vary as per the capacity and the type of technology used to manufacture them. Therefore, battery health, longevity and overall health are significant concerns for electric vehicle drivers today as replacements out of warranty can burn a hole in their pockets.

EV Batteries and Their Characteristics:

  • Lithium Ion batteries are different from the lead acid batteries used as a 12 V source in internal combustion engine vehicles. Lithium ion batteries are used in mobile phones, laptops and electric vehicle battery packs.
  • Even though the charge holding capacity of a battery deteriorates with time, lithium ion batteries are highly dense and are less prone to losing their charging characteristics with time.
  • EV batteries comprise of multiple individual cells instead of one single unit. These also have a much higher energy density than nickel metal hydride cells and can hold more charge effectively.

EV Battery Failure Protection Systems:

  • Even though the battery health would deplete, it is highly unlikely for all the battery cells in the entire battery pack to fail all of a sudden.
  • To regulate battery charging, battery packs are controlled by dedicated battery management systems, which prevent the battery from charging 100% to its maximum capacity or getting discharged to the extent of the entire battery drain. This preserves the efficiency of the batteries for a more extended period and also extends the overall life cycle.
  • Battery cooling systems with insulations are introduced to regulate EV battery operation temperatures and boundaries to make them somewhat adaptable to the surrounding temperatures.

Factors Determining Battery Performance and Longevity:

  • As per the reports from multiple sources, battery health is likely to vary with numerous factors including the driving patterns of an individual.
  • As almost all electric vehicles feature a regenerative braking system, the single pedal drive is also one of the alternatives opted for by many electric vehicle drivers on the road. With this technology, people cruising on the highway are able to obtain much less range on the same charge when compared to bumper to bumper traffic.
  • The range and longevity of a battery can further vary with the load being pulled by the vehicle on the basis of the number of occupants and cargo.
  • With enough data to date, getting less range than intended does not directly indicate the deterioration of the quality of the battery pack.
  • It can also depend upon temperature and weather conditions. In extremely cold climates, the optimum battery operating temperature is affected along with the impact on charging characteristics. Batteries tend to draw more battery power than average in such conditions.
  • Electric vehicles exposed to hotter climates tend to lose battery juice much quicker as extreme heat is a rival for all lithium ion batteries. For the same reason, many automotive manufacturers equip their vehicles with liquid battery cooling systems to maintain the optimum battery temperatures.
  • Charging the electric vehicles using a fast DC charger frequently also affects the overall battery life and performance as this heats up the battery pack repeatedly while charging.
  • In contrast with the high mileage of an EV, the ones not having enough miles on the odometer over the years are also prone to quick battery deterioration.

Therefore, we cannot directly blame the high mileage of an EV for affecting battery longevity as it is a much more subjective term on the base level itself. Automotive manufacturers have sought to deal with this in a much more effective way by providing extended warranties on battery packs so as to receive the electric vehicle owner from stress in the long term.

Most of the electric vehicles feature a minimum of eight years of warranty on the battery pack. Some automotive manufacturers cap the mileage to 1 or 1.5 lakh kilometres, while some take a step ahead and offer unlimited kilometres or lifetime coverage. Morris Garages provides a 5 year unlimited kilometres warranty for the MG ZS EV which can be further extended to 8 years or 1.5 lakh kilometres. Tata Nexon EV is offered with a remarkable standard warranty of 8 years or 1.6 lakh kilometres, whichever comes earlier. However, warranties are always subject to terms and conditions, and you as a consumer should surely go through them in detail.
