What is Day and Night IRVM - All You Need To Know About It

IRVM or Inside Rear View Mirror is the mirror in a car or any other automobile, which is made in a way that allows the driver to observe rearward vehicles without much eye strain. As is commonly known, the rearview mirror is one of your car's most critical parts, even if it is a small part. While almost a century ago, the use of rearview mirrors was not as common as today, the essence of these mirrors was felt mostly in safety-enabled driving. Most governments today make this a mandatory feature of all automobiles and cars on the road. Today, in this article, we tell you what is day and night IRVM.

What is Day and Night IRVM

The Day and Night IRVM with an anti-glare feature is a must-have feature for most cars today. The concept is - when the light from the headlight of a vehicle behind falls on such a rearview mirror, the mirror can be adjusted to finish the glare. Some mirrors come with an integrated mechanism to control the reflection of the light, and in some cases, it is a manual system. The objective is to reduce glare.

What is the Use of the Day and Night IRVM?

At night, the mirrors help in warding off the glare off the headlights from the car behind. In the day, the rearview mirror works just like any standard ordinary rearview mirror, aptly showing the traffic behind.

The day and night IRVM has two surfaces - front and back. The front cover is like a straight glass, while the back surface has a reflective material coating. So, while the front acts like glass, the light gets reflected from the back cover. The standard rearview mirror has both the front and the back parallel to one another. However, in a day and night IRVM, the front and the back are not parallel. The bright reflections during the day can be viewed from the back surface, and a fainter reflection can be viewed from the front during the night.

Understanding the Technology

The manually-operated day and night IRVM is simply flipped using a lever. In this case, the mirror is a prismatic mirror with a wedge-shaped mirror on the inside. During the day, the objects behind are reflected from the surface of the mirror. At night, the plain mirror tends to bounce off the light coming in from the headlights of the car behind. It can distract the driver and cause a lot of strain on the eyes. Such a glare also becomes the reason for many accidents on the road amidst traffic.

What is Day and Night IRVM

The day and night auto-dimming mirrors or IRVM use sensor technology to dim the lights. These mirrors contain two glass pieces that are coated with electrically-conductive materials. These are filled with electrochromic gel or ions that tend to go dark on receiving voltage. These mirrors have two sensors - ambient and glare. The ambient sensor senses the intensity of the light and informs the control unit to dim the mirror. The glare sensor senses the amount of light hitting the mirror. The case of glaring light tells the control unit to activate the ions and darken the mirror. Once the glare is finished, the mirror is back to normal again.
