White Smoke Coming From Car Exhaust? Check All Reasons Here!

The mechanicals and powertrain of a vehicle are extremely complex and sometimes diagnosing an issue becomes extremely difficult. One of the issues that are commonly faced by the car owners is observing white smoke from the car's exhaust. So, why do we see white smoke coming from car exhaust? Well, there are a number of reasons for the same and read this article to find out the answer to this question.

White Smoke Coming From Car Exhaust

Following are the main causes behind the emission of white smoke from the engine, some of which are even expensive to rectify as well:-
1. Coolant leakage Due to a possible crack or breakage in the engine block or cylinder head, there is a possibility of leakage of coolant. And it is this leakage of coolant in the engine, which can mix up with the engine oil and contaminate it, resulting in the emission of white smoke. This phenomenon also results in overheating of the engine as well as much faster wear and tear of engine components.

2. Damaged fuel injector If the fuel injector in your engine is clogged due to dirt and dust particles or is suffering from any kind of leakage or breakage in it, it can result in an either limited supply of fuel or over-spilling of fuel in the engine from the fuel injector. This causes irregular combustion of fuel in the engine, the remedy of which is only the replacement of the particular fuel injector.

3. Leakage in piston rings If there is any leakage in the valve seals or the piston rings due to development of any kind of crack, it too can cause leakage of engine oil in the combustion chamber, which will only contaminate the air-fuel mixture. This also results in the emission of white or blue smoke in even worse cases.

4. Incorrect valve or injector timing This one is particularly for the diesel engines, which might suffer improper timing of the spray of fuel in the combustion chamber. This can result in more than required enrichment of the fuel in the air-fuel mixture, which can result in incomplete combustion, which emerges out in the form of white smoke.

5. Condensation Out of all the aforementioned reasons, this one is the least worrisome one, and happens only when you give the engine a cold start. When temperatures drop down, the hot exhaust gases coming out from the engine form white coloured steam which appears like smoke. This smoke does vanish out after some time of driving if all is fine with the engine.
