Launched back in 1989 in India, the Contessa Classic came as a very refined, powerful, and luxurious product in the segment. The Contessa, popularly known as the Conti, was launched in 1984 for the first time and was priced at Rs 83,500! It may look like a minimal value today, but it was one of the most expensive cars back in the day. The Contessa locked its horns directly with the Fiat Padmini and offered many segment-first features. Today, in this edition of the series 'Walking Down The Memory Lane', we bring you HM Contessa Classic Brochure images.

The HM Contessa Classic came with a boxy and macho design language. This Indian muscle car came with big headlamps, an elegant grille, and a long hood, making it look very appealing and futuristic for its time. There were chrome elements used almost everywhere in the car, which gave it a premium appeal. In addition to this, this was one of the first cars to be offered with optional tinted glasses.

It was not just the design of the Conti, which was revolutionary for its time. The car came with many segment-first features and exceptional comfort levels. The car was long and had a very spacious cabin. It was one of the first cars to feature bucket seats with adjustable headrests and five links rear suspension with anti-roll bars. At the front, the HM Contessa Classic features an independent wishbone and hydraulically dampened coil springs. The suspension offered such an excellent ride quality that there were hardly any bumps that filtered into the cabin.

Contessa

The HM Contessa Classic was powered by a 1.8-L petrol engine that churned out 74 hp and 130 Nm of peak torque. The engine came with a 5-Speed MT and rear-wheel drive. In addition to this, the car was also equipped with a factory-fitted air-conditioner, which was unheard of in most other rivals at that time. The Contessa Classic was available in Crystal White, MB Ivory, Calypso Blue, Sherry Red, Forest Green and Steel Grey colour schemes. Large, powerful halogen lamps and wrap-around fibreglass fenders were also some of the unique elements in the package.

Unfortunately, after the arrival of cars from GM, Ford, and Honda, the demand for the Contessa began to wane, and HM decided to take it off the shelves.
