This is the model that changed the 'luxury SUV' market and long-distance driving experience in India. It is an SUV that gave the most comfortable sedans a run for their money; it has immense capabilities and excellent driving dynamics! Yes, we are talking about the first-gen Ford Endeavour. Launched in the country for the first time in 2003, the Ford Endeavour came with a bold and imposing design language. In our series of walking down the memory lane, thanks to our usual friend XOLO, we bring you the original Ford Endeavour brochure today for you.

A long hood, a boxy shape and an even longer length made the Ford Endeavour look mighty and menacing. The large headlamps and a large chrome grille at the front with the blue oval in the centre, along with the high mounted fog lamps on the short bumpers, gave this beast a stunning road presence. The flared wheel arches, big tyres, and a very high ground clearance meant this car could be taken almost anywhere. An optional four-wheel-drive system further enhanced the capabilities of this vehicle. The overdone chrome treatment all around the car did make it look much more premium, and at the same time, design elements and that tail-gate mounted spare wheel gave the Endeavour a much more robust and a raw look.

Powering the first-gen Endeavour was a 2.5-L Turbo Diesel engine that produced 110 PS @ 3,500 RPM and a peak torque output of 274 NM @ 2,000 RPM. The 5-Speed MT Gearbox may not be the smoothest to operate, but the clever gear ratios and that powerful engine helped this SUV pick up speeds quickly. The Endeavour came with Independent Double Wishbone suspension with Torsion Bar Spring and stabiliser bar at the front, while the rear wheels had progressive linear rate leaf springs with low friction pads. The shock absorbers at the front and the rear were tubular double-acting types filled with composite oil and gas. Overall, the suspension setup provided an excellent ride and handling balance combination. Push the car, and you will be rewarded with a massive grin on your face, and while taking it offroad, your passengers won't complain.

On stepping inside the car, you will be welcomed by an extremely premium, practical and comfortable cabin. The dashboard looked modern, yet the overall robust look was carried forward in the interiors. The seats were cushiony and highly supportive. However, the seat base was close to the floor, and you often sat in the knee-up position, making it not the best in terms of comforts. The longer length of the vehicle caused the second and the third rows to get a lot of space than you would expect, though.

The Original Ford Endeavour was not just a fast, capable, and comfortable vehicle but at the same time came with almost all the safety systems and features which were available at that time. In addition to dual front airbags, the Ford Endeavour comes with a collapsible steering wheel, four-channel ABS, EBD, and steel reinforcements in all four doors to maximise safety for the passenger area.

The Ford Endeavour comes loaded with bells and whistles such as power windows, cigarette lighter, dual-zone air conditioner, electrically adjustable ORVMs, rear wipers and defogger, and many other features that were unheard of at that time. The original Ford Endeavour was available in three colour options - steel mist, oyster and panther black.
