1998 Honda City i-VTEC Brochure: Walking Down The Memory Lane!

It is a car that brought massive success to Honda in the Indian market, it is a car that gave drivers a colossal smile with every tap on the throttle, and it is a car that gave memories to all of us. Today, in this series of Walking Down The Memory Lane, we bring you the First-Gen Honda City i-VTEC Brochure images. Launched in the country in 1998, the first-gen Honda city saw the introduction of the i-VTEC engine in its lineup post the first facelift a couple of years later. Ever since the launch, the First Gen Honda City, often referred to as Type I, was appreciated in the market and brought in high sales numbers for the brand. However, in 2001, Honda decided to introduce a new 1.5-L i-VTEC engine and aesthetical updates to the car. This car was known as the Type II Honda City. It featured not only a much more superior engine but larger chrome alloys, a rear spoiler, twin exhausts, and several other features that made it a valuable upgrade from the Type I City.

The 1.5-L i-VTEC engine introduced with Typ II City was performance-oriented and responsive. The engine was refined, felt very smooth, and had a supreme top end. In addition, the engine came mated to a gearbox with tall gear ratios, which helped the car reach the 100kmph mark in just second gear! In terms of performance, the Honda City i-VTEC did a 0-100kmph run in just under 10 secs and weighed below 1000 kgs.

A big rear spoiler, twin exhaust setup, large chrome alloy wheels and many other cosmetical changes differentiated the Type II from the Type I. The Type I City was also on sale alongside the Type II and came with a 1.5-L petrol engine.

Inside, the City i-VTEC featured a plush looking cabin and a four-spoke steering wheel. The dials on the instrument cluster were large and clear, and the centre console was within easy reach from the driver's seat and had a simple layout. The seats at the front were comfortable but placed very low, while space in the rear was at a premium.

Honda handsomely equipped the City Type II with some features. The car also featured Honda's music system, which came with remote control in addition to the air conditioner, power window switches, and bottle holders. Overall, the interiors were a nice place to be in and scored very high in terms of practicality and comfort.

However, the talking point of this car was the 1.5-L, SOHC, Naturally Aspirated, the 4-cylinder i-VTEC engine, which churned out 106hp @ 6,800 RPMs and 132 NM @ 4,700 RPMs. For the first time, Honda introduced a petrol engine with Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) technology in the country. The engine came mated to a 5-Speed MT and featured a hydraulic steering wheel. The car was not just fast but was extremely agile and great to handle. The 2001 Honda City i-VTEC Type II was a great car and made a number of us the hardcore driving enthusiasts we are today. It gained popularity like wildfire and will be remembered for a long time. We will be back with the following sequence of this series. Till then, stay tuned!
