Main Components Of Airbag System Of The Car - All Details!

With the rise in use of cars and an eventual increase in careless driving by many people, the innovation of airbags has turned out to be a life saviour for many people. However, it is worth understanding that the airbags and the airbag system is highly complicated and understanding it will require some great efforts. Having said that, check out all the main components of airbag system here.

Main Components Of Airbag System

The airbags have gone on to become the most essential safety feature in modern cars, and the entire system is comprised of a number of components, which are as follows:-
1. Airbag First of all, lets address the elephant in the room, i.e., the main component of the entire system. Usually made up of nylon fabric, the airbags are coated with a heat shield and are assembled behind the steering wheel centre boss, passenger side of the dashboard and internal side pillars.
2. Wiring harness All the components of the airbag system are interconnected to each other with the help of a number of wires. If any one of the wire gets damaged, the entire functioning of the airbag system gets affected, or in the worst case, the airbags might not open up at the time of the crash.

3. Crash sensors The crash sensors in a car are usually placed in those positions which are subjected to crash, like front bumpers and door panels. The crash sensors will activate the inflation process of the airbags whenever it senses a major crash at the time of an impact on them.
4. Airbag indicator light This light is present in the instrument console of your car, and glows with yellow light. This lamp glows in two conditions either there is some malfunction somewhere in the airbag system or for a few seconds when the vehicle diagnostic check takes place.

5. Diagnostic monitoring unit This particular thing is responsible for carrying out a system check whenever you turn on your car. If there is any malfunction in the airbags system, or the airbags are not reinstalled properly after repairing caused by inflation of airbags at the time of the accident, it will turn on the airbag indicator light and warn you of a possible fault.
6. Airbag inflator The airbag inflator is that component which opens up the airbags at the time of the crash. This particular system creates nitrogen gas and inserts it into the airbags for immediate inflation of the airbags, with the gas produced as a result of a mixture of potassium nitrate and sodium azide.
