The journey to the creation of the Range Rover began with the Rover Company&#39;s &quot;Road Rover&quot; project in 1951, which aimed to develop a larger model than the Land Rover Series. Although the project was shelved in 1958, it was revived in 1966 when engineers Spen King and Gordon Bashford embarked on designing a new model.The first Range Rover prototype, bearing the license plate SYE 157F, was constructed in 1967, and the design was eventually finalized in 1969. Between 1969 and 1970, 
twenty-six engineering development vehicles were produced, bearing the name Velar and registered with number plates YVB151H through YVB177H. Notably, YVB 153H, chassis no. 3, is believed to be the first one off the production line in response to urgent marketing needs.

The name &quot;Velar&quot; was borrowed from the Italian word &quot;velare,&quot; which means &quot;to veil&quot; or &quot;to cover.&quot; Range Rover development engineer Geof Miller used this name as a decoy for registering pre-production Range Rovers. The Velar company was officially registered in London and manufactured 40 pre-production vehicles from 1967 to 1970.The Range Rover made its official debut in 1970, and its outstanding design was even displayed at the Mus&eacute;e du Louvre in Paris during the early 1970s, 
recognized as an exemplary achievement in industrial design.

 
Tata Motors, a division of the Tata Group, took a significant step on 18 January 2008 when it established Jaguar Land Rover Limited as a British-registered, fully owned subsidiary. The primary purpose of this new entity was to serve as a holding company to facilitate the acquisition of two renowned businesses from Ford: Jaguar Cars Limited and Land Rover. This pivotal acquisition was successfully concluded on 2 June 2008, with a transaction cost of &pound;1.7 billion.

Additionally, this acquisition included the rights to three other esteemed British automotive brands: the Daimler marque, along with two dormant brands, Lanchester and Rover.
