Honda offers the Amaze with two engine options - a 1.2L petrol and a 1.5L diesel engine. Both the engines are offered with a 5-speed stick shift as standard and an optional CVT unit. The petrol makes 90 PS of maximum power with 110 Nm of peak torque, while the 1.5L diesel motor generates 100 PS and 200 Nm with a 5-speed manual but a slightly lower 80 PS and 160 Nm with the CVT. The engine redlines all the way until 6700 RPM but the mid-range is still the weak point here. Thankfully, the power delivery is better from the CVT-equipped model.
It is the petrol motor that is more refined at idle. It’s a near-silent operator even at higher engine speeds and it gets audible only when pushed really hard. The diesel, too, is remarkably quieter but gets pretty vocal when pushed hard. One can also feel some vibrations on the steering wheel.
If you love munching kilometres on the highways and want an excellent fuel economy, the diesel variant is the one to go for. We drove the diesel CVT extensively and can say that even with lesser power under the hood, it is a convenient sedan to drive in all conditions. Regardless of the transmission you choose, the oil-burner is a responsive unit, while the Sports mode of the CVT lets you rev till the redline.
Honda Amaze is the only sedan to provide CVT-diesel combo and if you are someone who likes convenience and good fuel mileage then this one is the one to go for. The petrol is a good alternative if you have less running and want a more refined motor.
Banking on the success of the pre-lift design, Honda has played it safe with this facelift. Hence, the car only gets minor updates. At the front, it now comes with a new grille design that carries a couple of chrome strips that lend it a very Accord-like look. The all-new LED projector headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights are some elements that were much needed in today's era. Mind you, the pre-facelift version only got halogen headlights and position lamps.
The bumper design remains the same but the fog light housings are new and now get inverted-L chrome treatment. Also, these lights get LED treatment that helps in improving the visibility ahead. On the sides, the changes remain limited to chrome door handles and the new 15-inch diamond-cut dual-tone alloy wheels from the last-gen City. At the rear profile, you now get updated C-shaped LED tail lights and some tasteful chrome garnish at the lower part of the bumper.
The Honda Amaze measures 3995 mm in length, 1695 mm in width and 1501 mm in height. The wheelbase is pegged at 2470 mm while there’s 165 mm of ground clearance on offer.
Overall, the silhouette of the Honda Amaze remains the same but the updated styling brings in some freshness to this sub-4-metre sedan.
Inside, things remain similar to the pre-facelift model. What's new are the silver accents on the steering wheel and the dashboard that gel well with the black and beige interior colour scheme. The additions also include new beige seat fabrics on the top-end trim. The Digipad 2.0 touchscreen infotainment unit has been carried over from the pre-facelift model and offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity options. You also get a dust and pollen filter, chrome finish on AC vents and a new inside lining on the trunk.
Other features on the Honda Amaze include all four power windows, an automatic climate control, keyless entry, engine start/stop button, cruise control, reverse camera, power-folding ORVMs, manual IRVM and others.
Like the exterior, the interior updates are limited to few changes. The facelifted Amaze still misses out on driver armrest, auto-dimming IRVM and rear AC vents.
Honda Amaze has a soft suspension setup and while it feels good over broken patches of roads at relatively high speeds, it is the sharper ones that need your attention. At lower speeds, the bumps make the ride quality suffer and cause discomfort to the occupants. With full load, there are chances that the underbelly might get scraped over speed breakers.
The steering is quite heavy in the diesel Amaze. While this may give confidence moving in a straight line at highway speeds, the cornering isn't that precise as its rivals. Even at lower speeds, the steering feels heavy and that may be a problem for some. Also, there's a good amount of body roll thanks to the soft suspension setup. What still brings back the points to the Amaze are its brakes. They're responsive and the car is easily brought to a standstill even from triple-digit speeds.
The Honda Amaze offers a decent ride quality over most surfaces but low-speed ride over sharp undulations could have been better, while the steering needs to be a bit lighter.
Honda Amaze has bagged a 4-star safety rating at the Global NCAP. It scored 14.08 out of 17 points in the adult passenger protection but only 8.16 out of 49 points in the child passenger protection. The compact sedan also gets dual airbags, an anti-lock braking system with electronic brake-force distribution, hill hold control, ISOFIX child seat mounts, front seat belt warning and a high-speed alert system.
Honda Amaze has a strong body shell and has scored 4-stars at the Global NCAP rating. However, child passenger protection might be worrisome for those who travel with toddlers.
