The Hyundai Aura now only has a CNG powertrain, a 1.2-liter petrol engine, and a 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine. Hyundai Aura was one of the most fuel-efficient diesel cars in India.
Hyundai Aura CNG Update:
Hyundai has added a new top-of-the-line SX variant to the Aura CNG portfolio. The SX model with a CNG powerplant and a tonne of features costs Rs 8.57 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), which is Rs 95,000 higher than the regular SX trim.

While the segment-leader Maruti Suzuki Dzire is no longer available with a diesel engine option, the Hyundai Aura is available in as many as 4 engine variants – 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol, 1.2-litre CNG, 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol and 1.2-litre turbocharged diesel. The entry-level petrol model outputs 83 PS and 113 Nm, while the diesel motor produces 75 PS and 194 Nm. The turbocharged petrol version offers 100 PS and 175 Nm. The base petrol and the diesel motors can be bought either with a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT while the turbo-petrol motor is available only with a 5-speed manual unit.
The 1.2-litre motor offers a good torque spread and decent refinement level, while the NVH is quite well-controlled. That said, the engine gets a bit too vocal when you step on the gas with a heavy foot. The tractability offered by this engine is pretty impressive and you can potter around the town in second gear all day long. Even the in-gear acceleration is strong but overtaking takes a bit of planning.
The diesel engine offers a strong grunt above 1,500 RPM while the manual transmission offers smooth shifts and light clutch action. The same motor doesn’t feel as lively with the AMT, which is simply because of the combined inherent lag of AMTs and turbocharged diesel engines. But the manual version is actually quite fun on the expressways with abundance of torque and good torque spread across the mid-range. The 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine is the most exciting due to a minimal turbo-lag and strong grunt across the rev range. This version is even capable of sprinting from 0-100 kmph in less than 10 seconds, which makes it one of the quickest cars in its price segment. Of course, the CNG is for those looking for ultra-low running costs and the peace of mind that comes from having a factory-fitted CNG kit.

Deriving a sedan from a hatchback is never an easy task as adding a third box to the design often ruins the proportions of the vehicle. As expected, the Hyundai Aura, which is nothing but a Grand i10 Nios with a bigger boot, doesn’t have the best proportions around but it surely doesn’t look ungainly. Also, the carmaker has done enough to help one easily distinguish between the Aura and the Grand i10 NIOS even when viewing both the models front on.
The Hyundai Aura gets an updated grille that looks a bit sportier while even the bumper is new and looks better than what you get on the hatchback sibling. The headlights have been updated, too, and boomerang-style LED DRLs on the grille add some more flair to the front-end. The side profile isn’t a very pretty sight but the designers have tried to add some jazz through diamond-cut alloy wheels and a blacked-out C-pillar for the floating-roof effect. Even the rear-end is nothing to write home about and the designers have tried hard to make it attractive. The usage of huge wrap-around taillamps definitely induce some visual drama to the posterior but they’re a bit too loud for some.
The Hyundai Aura would not win any design contests but full marks to the designers at Hyundai for the neat transformation of the Grand i10 NIOS into a sub-4-metre compact sedan.
Inside, the Hyundai Aura feels much like the Grand i10 NIOS as the two share almost every panel between each other. The dashboard is exactly what you get on the hatchback sister and features a single-panel design for the touchscreen infotainment unit and the semi-digital instrumentation. The only difference arises out of the bronze-colour trim on the Aura instead of the silver-finished décor on the NIOS.
The seat upholstery is light in colour, which means maintaining it will be pretty tough but the cabin is highly practical with several cubby holes located in every nook and corner of the interior. Meanwhile, the turbo variant gets matte-black trim instead of bronze and the chrome bits have made way for red inserts. The front seats miss out on adjustable headrests, but this feature is surprisingly on offer on the rear bench. Plus, the flat floor and the wide seat ensure that the rear can accommodate three adults on at least short journeys.
The equipment level stays the same as that of the NIOS except for the addition of the cruise control on the top-spec model. Other highlights of the cabin include bits like an 8-inch infotainment screen, rear AC vents, cruise control, wireless smartphone charger and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto support.
Inside, the Hyundai Aura is as capable as the NIOS but the additional boot space helps one carry much more luggage.
The Hyundai Aura comes with an ultra-light steering that helps one easily find his way on the over-congested city streets. The light steering even helps one squeeze into tight parking spots but thankfully, the wheel does weigh up a bit as speeds increase. There’s even some feedback in the corners and only the most enthusiastic of the drivers will be left wanting for a more communicative steering.
While the Hyundai Aura isn’t the perfect car for apex-hunting, it’s definitely among the most comfortable options in its class. It glides over most of the undulations and it’s only the really sharp speed-breakers and potholes that tend to upset the composure of this car. The front passengers stay comfortable over all sorts of surfaces while things get a bit bouncy at the rear. On large irregularities, there’s even some vertical movement experienced at the back. However, things never get very uncomfortable and as we said, the Aura is among the better options when it comes to the ride comfort on offer.
Hyundai Aura offers a good mix of outright handling and plushness, with its steering offering sufficient feedback and the suspension ironing out most of the rough surfaces.
The Hyundai Aura is yet to be tested by Global NCAP but if the carmaker’s claims are to be believed, the 65 per cent Advanced High Strength Steel and High Strength Steel in the structure of this compact sedan should keep the occupants protected in an event of a crash. Also, all variants come equipped with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD and ISOFIX child seat mounts as standard. Moreover, all versions except for base-level E trim get impact-sensing door unlock and speed-sensing door lock.
Another well-thought safety feature comes in the form of emergency brake signal that lights up to avoid rear-end collision in case of sudden braking by the Aura. Another highlight is the rear view monitor that enables the driver to have a view of the rear while driving forward.
The Hyundai Aura comes with a host of active and passive safety features that should keep the occupants safe in an unfortunate event of an accident.
