Honda ZR-V vs Skoda Kodiaq: Which Premium SUV Should You Buy?

Honda Cars India has launched its new flagship SUV, the ZR-V, at Rs 48 lakh (ex-showroom). It arrives via the CBU route in limited numbers. Honda says future volumes will depend on demand. At this price, the ZR-V lands squarely against the Skoda Kodiaq, a premium crossover known for its 2.0-litre engine and feature-rich cabin. That sets up a natural question: which one delivers the better luxury experience under Rs 50 lakh?

The Honda ZR-V is available in a single variant and costs Rs 47.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The Skoda Kodiaq, on the other hand, comes in three variants: Lounge, Sportline and Selection L&K. It starts at Rs 37 lakh and goes up to Rs 47 lakh (ex-showroom).

Here, the Kodiaq feels like the more sensible choice, just on pricing. It offers more variants to choose from and costs significantly less. There are other distinctions too. The base Lounge trim is a five-seater, skips ADAS, and gets fewer features than the higher trims. Even so, it still comes with an AWD drivetrain, the 2.0-litre TSI engine, and most of the Kodiaq's other core equipment.

Powertrain Difference

This is the most interesting part of the comparison, as the two are poles apart when it comes to powertrain. One is engineered for maximum fuel efficiency, the other for a thrilling drive. Yet both share the same displacement: a 2.0-litre petrol setup.

Honda's ZR-V uses a 2.0-litre e:HEV strong-hybrid system that sends power to the front wheels from both the engine and electric motors. The transition between the two power sources is smooth enough that the driver barely notices it. The Kodiaq's feature list includes a 12.9-inch infotainment screen, three-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, dual wireless chargers, front seats with memory function, both heating and ventilation, a thigh-support extender, and a massage function. Both driver and co-passenger get top-tier comfort. The rear seats get individual sun blinds, an iPad mount, and their own climate control zone.

The Kodiaq's biggest advantage is its third-row seat, which folds and retracts electrically at the touch of a button. It also gets a high-resolution 360-degree camera and, on the safety front, nine airbags and Level 2 ADAS. At Rs 47 lakh (ex-showroom), the Kodiaq is the clear pick over the ZR-V for outright premiumness.

Design and Dimensions

Both fall under the SUV body type, but they're built as soft-roaders offering a smooth on-road experience, and both use a monocoque chassis. The ZR-V is the noticeably shorter of the two, at around 4.57 metres in length, against the Kodiaq's 4.7 metres. That size difference carries through to seating: the Kodiaq is a 7-seater, while the ZR-V is a 5-seater.

Boot space also differs significantly because of this size gap. In every practical sense, the ZR-V feels like a mid-size SUV, while the Kodiaq feels full-size. Both get a sloping roofline, which softens their stance rather than giving them an upright, butch look. Beyond that, the two go their separate ways on design.

The ZR-V, despite being a Japanese car, wears a distinctly Italian face. Its grille and character lines echo Maserati, as do its side proportions. The core reason to recommend the Honda ZR-V is its high fuel efficiency and premium quality of materials. Beyond that, it's a tough sell at this price. There's simply too wide a variety of cars to justify paying this much for a bare-minimum feature set on a 4.57-metre car. Even if you're a Honda loyalist, this will still feel overpriced.
