Nissan X Trail
The X-Trail brand name has come back to the Indian market; this time, it costs over half a crore in terms of on-road price. The 2024 X-Trail is a CBU (completely built unit) import and only 150 units will be sold in the country. This is more of a brand-building exercise, and Nissan wants to showcase the technology on offer. The 3-row X-Trail comes with a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol motor and uses a clever hybrid system to boost performance when needed. It looks modern too, but lacks basic features and a diesel engine option. However, we love the ride quality and overall comfort levels.

Pros & Cons of X Trail
What we admire in this car
What we admire in this car
Nissan X-Trail 1.5L 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine is one of the most refined 3-cylinder engine, which can outperform several bigger powertrains.
The X-Trail is a mechanically sorted vehicle that is definitely over-engineered to provide a class-apart experience.
The X-Trail is a strikingly beautiful SUV that, despite being a Japanese vehicle, resembles a European one.
This SUV has a great road presence, and in public, it will definitely get a lot of attention.
Despite being a 3-row, full-size SUV, the X-Trail achieves a mileage of 13.7 kmpl (ARAI), which is impressive considering its enormous size.
One of the best CVT gearboxes available in the market, it shifts quickly and doesn’t have the typical rubber-band effect that CVTs are known for.
Features like panoramic sunroof, 9 Inch infotainment display, dual zone climate control, three-driving modes, 12 Inch driver’s display, does elevate its rich experience.
The only vehicle with 20-inch alloy wheels as standard, which surprisingly doesn’t hinder ride comfort.
585 liters of boot space with the third row folded, which is enough for all your luggage.
What could have been better
What could have been better
Nissan X-Trail is a great SUV, but still, the Rs 49.92 lakh ex-showroom price isn’t justifiable, which is the paramount reason why it doesn’t sell enough.
Despite costing above Rs 50 lakh, X-Trail doesn’t offer ADAS, powered front seats, ventilated front seats, leather interior and powered tail gate.
A CBU unit means its parts won’t be easily available, and a local mechanic won’t be able to fix it if anything goes wrong.
Its 1.5L engine produces 163 PS and 300 Nm of torque, but the same power specifications are also available in cars priced around Rs 20 lakh.
The X-Trail is not an out-and-out 7-seater; it is a 5+2 seater, which means the third-row seats are only suitable for children.
The X-Trail offers only one engine, which is disappointing for diesel lovers. A hybrid option could have been offered for better fuel efficiency.
There’s no AWD on offer, and the X-Trail is FWD, so its off-roading capabilities are limited.
Nissan X Trail Detailed Review
-
The X-Trail has come back after a long gap, and it does look fresh and relevant with modern design bits such as the split headlamp treatment.
-
Despite sporting 20-inch alloy rims, the X-Trail somehow manages to get dwarfed by certain SUVs from a segment below.
-
Three colour schemes on offer; black, silver and white. While the latter two may look and feel a bit too plain, the black paint scheme attracts quite a bit of attention.
-
The rear of the X-Trail might remind you of the Kicks, with a similar bulging tailgate and the treatment of the tail lamps.
X Trail body specifications:
| Wheel Size | R20 |
| Seating Capacity | 7 seaters |
| Ground Clearance | 210 mm |
| Boot Space | 177 liters |

-
The front seats are genuinely comfortable and hold you very well. However, the same cannot be said about the middle row, as there is a hump below the bench, making it somewhat uncomfortable for taller or larger-built passengers.
-
There are soft-touch materials on certain areas in the cabin, but a majority of it is all fabric, which, although is more practical given our weather conditions, it does not feel as premium.
-
There are obvious signs of cost-cutting; for example the housing of the infotainment screen. The border around the screen pod suggests that there could have been a much larger unit on offer.
-
The wood-like finish on the panel near the front armrest looks and feels like it belongs to a car from a lower segment.
-
The NVH and sound insulation levels are rather great, and the cabin hardly lets you feel anything. Even tyre noise has been curbed quite well. Only Sport mode makes things a little loud in an otherwise calm and quiet cabin, but it’s not a con for sure.
-
The fact that a car priced upwards of Rs 45 lakh does not offer ventilated seats or electric seat height adjustment is baffling in current times.
-
Another sign of cost-cutting; the ORVMs have an ADAS blind spot monitor sensor placed, but it does not work, and neither has it been highlighted as a feature by Nissan.
-
The sound system sounds gets surprisingly rough as you increase the volume, and does not feel on-par for its price.
-
The 8-inch touch screen, although small, does work rather well and there seemed to be no glitches or lags during our time with the car.
X Trail features:
| TPMS | Yes |
| Wireless Charger | Yes - Front |
| Ventilated Seats | No |
-
The car felt like a comfortable mile-muncher with two people and a couple of small bags on-board. However, the engine’s capabilities with a full load of passengers and luggage remains untested for now.
-
The CVT transmission actually does a good job of holding revs in both Standard and Sport modes.
-
The engine is very smooth, refined and it also sounds quite nice at higher rpms, especially in Sport mode.
-
Despite being low on numbers, the engine is quite responsive and feels more than enough in Standard mode. There is no real need to switch to Sport mode.
