The Toyota Fortuner is offered with two engine options - a 2.7L petrol and a 2.8L diesel. It is the latter that is the more favourable option among the buyers. The petrol unit generates as much as 164 bhp of power with a peak torque of 245 Nm. It comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission as standard and even gets an option of a 6-speed automatic unit. The ARAI claimed efficiency sticks to 10 kmpl and is not that economical for people who drive too much. Expect real world economy of 7-8 kmpl in traffic and 10-12 out on open roads.
The diesel is a 2.8L unit that churns out 201 bhp of maximum power and a peak torque of 420 Nm (MT) and 500 Nm(AT). The Fortuner gets both 2WD and 4WD options but the latter comes with a diesel engine only. However, it is the automatic that is the most potent with a peak torque of 500 Nm. Both the motors are refined and the AT variants feel better to drive in the city as well as on the highway. The low-end torque, quick shifting and linear power delivery makes the Fortuner a pretty energetic performer for its size and weight. The diesel engine gets three driving modes - Eco, Normal and Sports while the petrol gets only Eco and Power. These can be used to fine-tune the power delivery as per the driving style.
The petrol variant offers a refined engine but is a gas guzzler. But the diesel engine provides a good mix of performance and frugality.
When compared to the pre-lift model, the 2021 variant does not get as many changes as you would have expected. Still, a mid-cycle update surely enhances the look of the SUV. At the front, you now get an updated grille that is now bigger and better looking. The U-shaped chrome treatment has been retained and it gently makes its way into the headlights.

The headlight retains the projector setup but gets a newly styled LED daytime running light that looks more modern than before. The bumper design, too, is new and gets a faux skid plate to give the Fortuner a sporty character. Do notice the fog lights that are now slimmer than before. The side profile, more or less, remains the same but the 18-inch alloy wheels are new. These are reserved for the 4x4 variants and the 2WD units get 17-inch wheels. At the rear, the only noticeable change is the new pair of LED taillights. Chrome garnishes are observed on many parts like the grille, door handles, lower window lines and the strip connecting the taillights with Fortuner badging.
What's interesting is that if you opt for the top of the line Legender variant then you get a different grille design that looks aggressive, quad-LED headlights, sequential turn indicators that we have observed in premium cars, updated fog light housing, newly styled alloy wheels design and the dual-tone treatment.
The Toyota Fortuner is a huge SUV as it measures 4795 mm in length, 1855 mm in width, 1835 mm in height and carries a wheelbase of 2745 mm. The ground clearance of the SUV is pegged at 221 mm, which means it easily glides over potholes and the bad patches of roads.
Toyota Fortuner is a huge SUV and looks brute from every angle. With the new Legender variant, it now offers a sporty touch to the mix.
With its recent facelift, the Fortuner is now more in line with modern technologies and stands at par with Ford Endeavour and MG Gloster. Toyota has done a fair amount of work but its SUV still misses out on the huge panoramic sunroof that is loved by most people. Other highlights of the features list include front ventilated seats and electrically adjustable front seats. The 8.0-inch touchscreen offers modern connectivity features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto but the screen size could be bigger.
Other features include connected car tech (geofencing, real-time tracking, etc) and an 11-speaker JBL sound system. The top of the line Legender variant gets wireless charging, ambient lighting and dual-tone black and maroon upholstery that looks premium. However, it misses out on the 4WD that is a necessary feature for some.
The overall cabin design remains the same as before. Toyota still doesn’t provide captain seats in the middle row and continues with the bench type setup. The good thing is that the bench setup gives you a nice space and keeps you comfortable on long journeys. The underthigh support is adequate and you get loads of legroom. The centre armrest with cup holders make up for the convenience features and you do get roof-mounted AC vents as before. The Legender offers a USB port in the second row which is not available in all other variants.
Jumping to the third row is quite easy as you just have to tumble down and slide forward the second-row seats. However, it is best suited for kids and not adults. The long journeys can be tiresome due to the lack of underthigh support and shoulder space. What you can do instead is to recline the third row to get better headroom. If the third-row seats are folded then you have whole loads of boot space and the electrically adjustable tailgate with memory function is really a relief. The Legender variant additionally gets a kick-to-open sensor.
The interior of Toyota Fortuner offers more features than before but still misses out on an electric sunroof. We had definitely like wireless charging, panoramic sunroof, better music system, TPMS on the top-spec Toyota Fortuner.
This is an SUV that is built on a body-on-frame chassis and the first thing we would like to highlight is the abundant body roll that the occupants experience. For cornering, you need to plan the turns beforehand and move the SUV at a slower pace so that the rear passengers remain comfortably seated. Over the years, the suspension of the Fortuner has evolved a bit and got better-suited to the Indian road conditions.
The potholes and bad patches are mostly evened out with ease, but there's a sense of bounciness in the last row while the SUV is driven over bad roads. The steering is responsive (for a full sized SUV) but feels a tad too heavy at times, especially when driving in low-speed city traffic.
Toyota Fortuner has always been known for its off-roading capabilities and 29 degrees of approach and 25 degrees of departure angles help you easily take on the inclines. The 4x4 gets both high and low range and with the help of a lockable differential, the Fortuner ensures you easily get out of difficult situations. It also gets an auto limited-slip differential that provides you with the maximum power without losing out on the traction.
The suspension set-up of the Toyota Fortuner takes up the bad roads easily and even at highway speeds, the ride quality is better. It is at the low speeds the bumps will cause slight discomfort to the passengers if the driver does not keep the momentum. The steering of the Toyota Fortuner might seem heavy at low speeds but as the speed increases, it weighs up nicely
The Toyota Fortuner facelift has scored a 5-star safety rating in the ASEAN NCAP crash test. The SUV has bagged 34.03 points out of 36 points for adult protection and 43.38 points out of 49 points for child protection. In the safety assist technologies (SATs), the T-Fort has scored 13.00 out of 18.0 points.
Users of the Toyota Fortuner are quick to realize that this SUV is built like a tank.It offers loads of safety features. It gets as many as seven airbags, an anti-lock braking system with electronic brake-force distribution, electronic stability control, traction control, hill descent control, hill hold control, ISOFIX child seat mounts, rear parking sensors and a rear camera.
Easily, the updated Toyota Fortuner is among the safest cars in its segment and comes with a plethora of passive and active features.
