Top 5 AWD Sedans Available In India - German Supremacy

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • BYD Seal is the most affordable AWD sedan in India.
  • E-Class is the only car in its segment to offer AWD drivetrain.
  • Fastest to 100 km/h in this list is the most affordable.

If you think of yourself as an enthusiast or truly believe that you are born to drive, then All-Wheel-Drive sedans are the kind of vehicles that can unlock a whole new dimension of driving pleasure - something you won't experience in hatchbacks or SUVs. The total grip on roads, allows you to tackle sharp corners without even slowing down, giving you the confidence to push the limits. In India, thankfully we have several AWD sedans, which do a great job at being comfortable for 5 people and also carry large turbocharged petrol engines. So, here is a list of the top 5 of them, listed from prices going in ascending order. Let's begin, and in the meantime, make sure to join 91Wheels WhatsApp Channel to never miss out on automotive updates.

BYD Seal

BYD Seal, the first and foremost sedan on our list, is an electric vehicle with an 82.5 kWh battery pack that powers dual motors, producing 530 hp and 630 Nm of torque. The OEM claims it can do 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds, so it's hitting supercar territory. This battery setup with dual motors is only available in the top-spec Performance variant, with an ex-showroom price of Rs 53.15 lakh. Moreover, the Seal is also known for its ocean-inspired design, which gives it an exotic-looking shape with a long-slung body, and it has a drag coefficient of 0.219 cd, so it's highly efficient too.

BMW M340i

BMW M340i

In India, we don't get the BMW M3, the most fun-to-drive 3 Series you can get, but we do have the M340i, the fastest accelerating car built in India, with a 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds. The M340i is a performance sedan which is very different from the regular 3-Series Gran Limo, as its dimensions are smaller, plus it features a lot of M-Style elements that match up to its performance. Moreover, it is powered by a 3.0L turbocharged Inline-6 cylinder that churns out 374 hp and 500 Nm of torque, and sends it to all four wheels via an 8-speed DCT. Talking about its price - it costs Rs 74.90 lakh (ex-showroom).

Audi S5 Sportback

AWD Sedan

Audi S5 Sportback is not the most popular AWD sedan in India, but worldwide it is known for its glorious sound and for carrying forward the DNA of its big bro, the A7. Also, this sedan features a Sportback body, where the tailgate is unhinged and opens by taking the windshield, just like the A7. Talking about its engine, it features a 3.0L V6 mated to an 8-speed DCT that produces 354 hp and 500 Nm of torque. Plus, the mechanical component that is responsible for all the fun is Quattro - which perfectly distributes power to all four wheels, and the power distribution is 50/50, unlike other cars where the ratio is usually 80/20. Talking about the price, it costs Rs 77.77 lakh ex-showroom and is a delight to drive.

Mercedes Benz E-Class AMG Line

AWD Sedan

This is the top variant in the E-Class lineup, called the E450 4Matic AMG Line, offering a perfect concoction of performance and luxury. Here, the engine is a 3.0L turbocharged Inline-6 mated to a 48V electric motor that provides a little extra power and also helps with fuel efficiency. Together, they produce 404 hp (383 hp + 23 hp) and 500 Nm of torque, and the gearbox here is a 9-speed DCT. 0 to 100 km/h is done in 4.5 seconds. To add more, this is the only variant of the E-Class that gets an all-wheel-drive drivetrain; the other two are rear-wheel-drive. Lastly, it costs Rs 92.50 lakh (ex-showroom).

Mercedes-AMG C 43 4Matic

Again, this isn't a full-fledged AMG-powered vehicle, but it comes with AMG styling and a quad exhaust note that creates the aura of a true sports car. However, with an AWD setup and a 2.0L twin-turbo inline-4 engine producing 408 hp and 500 Nm of torque, it comes very close to crossing that fine performance line. For those who don't know, 4Matic stands for All-Wheel-Drive, and this one too electronically sends power to the wheels which it feels are getting the least amount of traction. C 43 4Matic direct rival is BMW M340i and Audi S5 Sportback, however, it does 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, which is slower than M340i 4.4 second claim, despite boasting more power. Talking about its price - Rs 99.40 lakh ex-showroom, so this is our first car on list which costs above Rs 1 Cr.

Verdict

The experience of driving an all-wheel-drive sedan is unmatched. The sheer confidence and control that the car gives is the reason why drivers love to revv them hard and act like an F1 racer. That said, we have added cars in this list in ascending order, and here are the 5 of them. This list can be extremely long, and the price can reach sky heights, but that would become a very long listicle. Also, the most expensive all-wheel-drive sedan in India is the Rolls Royce Ghost Series II.
