New Two Wheeler EV Launches On Hold!

Electric vehicles have certainly been picking up pace in the developing EV ecosystem of the country. Due to this rapid development, almost every manufacturer jumped into this race of developing two wheelers with an electric powertrain so as to keep up with the competition. As a result, comprehensive tests and quality checks at many milestones may have to be either skipped or were unintentionally ignored. In the recent days, we have come across many incidents of fires in two wheeler EVs. For the same reason, the government has asked to halt all new two wheeler EV launches.

As a part of the comprehensive diagnostic measures being undertaken by the authorities to prevent such incidents, special research teams have been deployed to investigate the reasons to justify these instances of electric two wheelers. This would not only help in improving the quality of the electric vehicles in the upcoming future but has also increased the level of safety as there would be specific standards formulated which would have to be followed by every electric vehicle manufacturer.

This decision to halt all new EV launches has been conveyed to the automotive manufacturers through a meeting by the Ministry of Transport and highways. For the same reason, the government has actively kicked in to mandate the recall of the entire batch of vehicles in which the fire incident was involved at any level. Having the whole batch for diagnostic purposes would increase the number of iterations and increase the precision of the conclusions to identify the reasons if they were unique to a particular scooter due to riding conditions or if there was a defect while manufacturing.

As per the statistics, in the past week, more than seven thousand electric scooters have been recalled by many manufacturers like Ola, Okinawa and Pure EV. All the instructions for diagnostics will further be conveyed to these automotive manufacturers soon.

A few days ago, we also came across a case where a compensation was issued to a customer for the airbags not working in his vehicle as they did not deploy in an unfortunate incident. This recall would also help introduce certain measures in terms of buyer protection standards where the Centre would be having the power to force recalls in such cases along with penalties and compensations. This strong hold over the manufacturing sector can certainly aid to improve the quality and build standards, thus delivering a good quality product to the end customer.
