NHAI Plans For Safer Commute Solutions! Here's How!

With an increasing number of accidents and mishaps taking place in the recent years, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), along with the police, has decided to take specific measures to regulate norms and make the commute safer on Indian Roads. NHAI plans to monitor traffic and study the data so as to present a practical front and resolve the problems.

As per the data shared by the traffic police of Gurugram, more than a thousand people were found to be dead or injured in road accidents. With more than 40 per cent of people suffering fatalities, 47 per cent were riding two wheelers comprising of cycles, scooters and motor bikes, 11 per cent were riding four wheelers, while the rest, 42 per cent, were pedestrians. This data reveals the need for well planned and traffic engineered roads in Gurugram. With pedestrians and two wheelers being the most vulnerable category and generally prone to mishaps and fatal accidents, the authorities claim it to be because of the lack of footpaths, pedestrian crossing, cycle roads and poor road infrastructure.

These factors are termed to be controllable by the authorities by regulating them from time to time and strengthening the law and order in terms of traffic. At many places in the city, the authorities were able to spot sensitive areas where traffic congestion problems arose due to non functional conditions of the roads, which ultimately led to accidents and fatalities. Therefore, a tender has been issued to repair the lanes as soon as possible. The places with a significantly high number of pedestrians would be aided with a foot overbridge to cross the road and ensure pedestrian safety.

Some accidents in the city and the Delhi - Gurgaon Expressway, late at night, have been suspected of having happened due to inadequate lighting of the streets, which poses a threat to both a pedestrian and a rider. As there is a lack of footpaths on the side of every road, pedestrians walk on the side of the road and at times are involved in accidents due to multiple reasons. Therefore, several solutions have been proposed by the authorities to safeguard both the pedestrians and two wheeler riders, one of them being high mast street lighting.

NHAI plans on installing high resolution CCTV cameras on the entire expressway. They would not only help in issuing a challan for speeding but would also help to know the root cause of a mishappening. Most of the mishaps on an expressway take place due to the overspending vehicles, which at times go out of the control on the driver, this posing a danger for both the occupants of the car and other public on road. With a concrete video clip proof of an accident, monitoring and detecting crimes can become much more manageable.

In order to understand all these problems and analyse them to the core, the authorities have decided to depute a team of experts to conduct more detailed and comprehensive surveys in prospective areas, so as to suggest measures to curb accidents. This would involve a significant amount of road engineering and vehicle traffic analysis. As per the members of the commission, roads are meant to be designed as per the behaviour and psyche of the people, instead of waiting for an accident to occur and then declaring several places as black spots on the entire expressway. Thus, all measures will be undertaken not to let the accidents happen in the first place and then curb the casualties at the prospective black spots.
