Mahindra has launched the Thar OG at a starting price of Rs 10.32 lakh (ex-showroom), going up to Rs 18.99 lakh (ex-showroom). While the starting price is unchanged from the outgoing version, prices at the top end have gone up slightly given the added features and mechanical upgrades. Mahindra has also revised the variant line-up, with a new ZXT trim added to the range. Let's break down what's changed in the 2026 Mahindra Thar OG compared to the outgoing model.
Thar OG vs Old: Dimensions
Parameter | Old Thar (outgoing) | Thar OG (new) | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
Length | 3,985 mm | 3,995 mm | +10 mm |
Width | 1,855 mm | 1,870 mm | +15 mm |
Height | 1,850 mm | 1,855 mm | +5 mm |
Wheelbase | 2,450 mm | 2,450 mm | Unchanged |
Ground Clearance | 226 mm | 232 mm | +6 mm |
Approach Angle | 41.2° | 40.0° | -1.2° |
Breakover Angle | 26.2° | 26.4° | +0.2° |
Departure Angle | 36.0° | 36.0° | Unchanged |
The new Thar OG is longer, wider, and taller than the outgoing model, while the wheelbase remains unchanged. Ground clearance has increased by 6 mm. The approach angle has reduced by 1.2 degrees, whereas the breakover angle has improved by 0.2 degrees. The departure angle remains unchanged.
Thar OG: Platform and Suspension
The biggest mechanical change is the Thar OG's move to a new 4th-generation platform, already seen on the Thar Roxx, while the outgoing 3-door Thar continues on the older 3rd-generation platform. Mahindra has also introduced a new suspension setup for a smoother ride, comprising Pentalink suspension paired with DaVinci dampers.
Additionally, Mahindra has added an electronic differential lock and a brake-lock differential. These additions significantly improve traction on low-grip and off-road surfaces, while the new suspension setup enhances overall ride comfort.
Thar OG vs Old: Design
The Thar OG retains its familiar silhouette, with noticeable changes to the front and rear styling. Up front, it now gets projector LED headlamps, LED DRLs, LED indicators, and LED tail lamps, with this all-LED lighting setup inspired by the Thar Roxx. The grille has also been revised, moving from a six-slat design to a five-slat design.
The front bumper adopts a cleaner, simpler look, and the fog lamps have shifted to the fenders. From the side, the overall profile stays largely unchanged, with the biggest visual update coming from the alloy wheels — they retain the familiar 10-spoke pattern but now come with a dual-tone finish. At the rear, the design remains largely familiar, though the Thar OG gains new LED tail lamps and a flatter bumper.
Thar OG vs Old: Interiors
The cabin layout hasn't changed significantly, but the Thar OG brings a fresh look with new chocolate-coloured seats that lend a more premium feel. It continues with the floating 10.25-inch touchscreen from before. The facelift also introduces a handful of new features, including a wireless charger, engine push-button start, and a digital driver's display.
Other carryover features include wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a six-speaker audio system, cruise control, a height-adjustable driver's seat, and steering-mounted controls. On the safety front, the Thar OG comes equipped with six airbags, front and rear parking sensors, a rear camera, TPMS, ISOFIX child-seat mounts, ABS with EBD, hill-hold control, and hill-descent control.
Thar OG vs Old: Powertrains
The Thar OG continues with the same three engine options as the outgoing model, including a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol, a 2.2-litre diesel, and a 1.5-litre diesel, but with meaningful power gains across two of the three units.
Engine | Old Thar | Thar OG | Transmission |
|---|---|---|---|
1.5L Turbo Diesel | 118 PS / 300 Nm | 117 PS / 300 Nm | 6-speed Manual |
2.2L mHawk Turbo Diesel | 131 PS / 300 Nm | 150 PS / 330 Nm | 6-speed Manual / 6-speed Automatic |
2.0L mStallion Turbo Petrol | 152 PS / 300-320 Nm | 160 PS / 330 Nm | 6-speed Manual / 6-speed Automatic |
The 2.2-litre diesel sees the biggest jump, up 19 PS, while the 2.0-litre petrol gains 8 PS. The 1.5-litre diesel stays largely unchanged, with a marginal 1 PS difference likely down to a minor recalibration rather than any meaningful shift in output.
End Note
Overall, the Thar OG feels like a more well-rounded product with this round of updates. The SUV is now more powerful and offers improved ride quality thanks to the new suspension and platform. The features list has grown, but it still misses out on a few conveniences like ventilated seats and automatic climate control. That said, as a complete package, the Thar OG makes a strong case for the price.
