Mahindra Scorpio Classic Expert Verdict
Features we admire in this car
- The Scorpio is one of the country's most inexpensive 7-seater SUVs.
- Unlike many of its competitors, the Scorpio has a genuine shift-on-the-fly 4WD system.
- The Mahindra Scorpio attracts a lot of attention on the road thanks to its aggressive appearance.
Features that could have been better
- The only 4WD option is the top-spec S11 version, which feels a little expensive for the stuff it provides.
- The Scorpio's fit and finish aren't up to par.
- The Scorpio's ride quality is rough and has a considerable degree of body roll due to its body on ladder frame construction.
Mahindra Scorpio Classic Detailed Review
Scorpio Classic Performance
The Mahindra Scorpio boasts a 2.2-liter diesel engine with two tuning settings, as was previously mentioned. According to the automaker, Scorpio's micro-Hybrid technology maximizes both power output and fuel economy. Additionally, the 4-cylinder mHawk engine now complies with the most recent BS6 emission requirements. It has a variable geometry turbocharger and an intercooler.
The Scorpio's S3+ variant has an engine designed to generate up to 118 bhp of power and 280 Nm of peak torque, while the S5, S7, S9, and S11 variants have engines that produce up to 138 bhp and 319 Nm of torque. The S3+ model comes with a 5-speed manual transmission, whereas the other variants have a 6-speed manual transmission.
The Scorpio's S5, S7, S9, and S11 variants' powertrain configurations deliver excellent performance. Although 4WD is no longer available, the engine's 319 Nm of torque undoubtedly comes in useful when making difficult manoeuvres on an off-road route. The car performs well in straight lines despite having a boxy shape. The ladder frame chassis, independent front suspension, and coil springs with a torsion bar at the back ensure that the car can resist the stress that comes with off-road driving. The S3+ variant's powerplant offers comparable performance to the other models.
Summary
An ARAI mileage of 15 kmpl along with a strong performance of the Scorpio in tough conditions as well as on highways makes the Scorpio an SUV that is desirable.
Scorpio Classic Exterior
The Mahindra Scorpio, in all of the several facets that have been given over the years, is a common sight on our road. It is the type of SUV that continues to be a popular option for purchasers who seek a tough vehicle with a masculine-looking stance. The Mahindra Scorpio is a boxy SUV. It gets a sizable, chrome-adorned trademark front grille. The headlights have a fresh style. It is a projector with built-in LED daytime running lights. The revised front bumper includes a central air intake vent and fog lights. A useful scoop is added to the bonnet for improved air intake. A silver coating that resembles a skid plate is added to the lower portion of the bumper.
The SUV has wide wheel arches that accommodate 17-inch alloy wheels on the side profile. The SUV has a chiselled appearance thanks to the lines and wrinkles on the side. SUV aficionados like the SUV's striking appearance that is created by the side profile. Additionally, the car has useful roof rails that give it an SUV-like appearance. Additionally, the side footboards in black are stylish and make it easy for passengers to get in and out of the car. After the Scorpio N is introduced in 2022, the Scorpio Classic is anticipated to get modest external updates.
The rear section of the SUV has a unique design. It comes with LED taillights and houses a spoiler integrated with the roof. The rear skid plate-like cladding gives the SUV a rugged look along with the aero blade wiper and chrome elements. In addition to this, there are reflectors on the rear bumper that enhances the look of the vehicle. The Scorpio measures 4456mm in length, 1820mm in width and 1995mm in height. It has a wheelbase of 2680mm.
Summary
The Mahindra Scorpio has an attractive design that lends a bold character to the SUV. The 17-inch alloy wheels on the top-spec variant even give it a very macho stance.
Scorpio Classic Interior
The Scorpio's interior is sleek, just like the outside of the car. The dash, which has a textured grey-black appearance and is upright and small, has been kept. The cabin seems more airy today thanks to clever use of bright colours. A 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility is housed in the dashboard. The SUV's interior has a luxurious imitation leather upholstery. The chairs have good padding and are cosy. Also, the driver seat is height-adjustable. The multi-spoke steering comes with audio controls for the driver’s convenience. The cabin is built with practicality in mind as it has lots of storage spaces. There are cubbyholes in the floor console and extra storage space in the centre. The cabin is also loaded with features like anti-pinch windows, electronically adjustable ORVM controls and an automatic driver-side window roll-up once the vehicle is locked.
The Scorpio is also equipped with an automatic HVAC system. The cabin can be cooled quickly thanks to the Scorpio’s powerful A/C unit. In addition to all these features, there is a 12V charging socket for added convenience. The overall fit and finish of the current-gen Scorpio is definitely a step-up from the versions that came before it, thereby making the cabin a nice and comfortable place to be in.
As for the seats, they provide decent comfort. The second-row seats provide decent under-thigh support and there is an ample amount of legroom. However, the third row is a whole different story. Travelling long distances in the third row can cause discomfort as there is minimal legroom and under-thigh support. The driver seat, on the other hand, is extremely comfortable.
Summary
Overall, the Scorpio cabin seems to have decent build quality. It has a plush interior and houses all the contemporary features.
Scorpio Classic Ride & Handling
The Mahindra Scorpio has a more rigid suspension system. Compared to the previous-generation model, body roll has been much reduced, although there is still noticeable body movement as the car turns a corner. Even though the suspension is built up to be more rigid, it smooths out minor road imperfections while the car is going at a low pace. The Scorpio boasts good high-speed stability and feels firmly planted on the road at greater speeds. Because of the engine's increased refinement, the NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) levels are considerably lower. The cabin is not affected by the vibrations.
Although the car's braking power has increased, they occasionally still seem a little soft and spongy. At slower speeds, the steering provides adequate feel. Unlike the Scorpio's predecessors, the SUV feels adequately nimble and quick at greater speeds, and the steering instils more confidence in the driver.
Summary
The Scorpio is so much more stable when compared to its predecessors. The vehicle is easy to drive and has a turning radius of 5.4 meters which means that driving through narrow lanes and taking U-turns is not too tough.
Scorpio Classic Safety
With front twin airbags, ABS, emergency brake indication, a collapsible steering column and side intrusion beams, an engine immobiliser, anti-theft alert, and a seat belt reminder bulb, the new Scorpio is crammed with safety features. Additionally, the car has a speed alert and an automatic door lock.
Summary
Even though the car has many safety features on board, it has scored badly in the global NCAP crash tests. We believe that Mahindra should include more airbags for added safety at least on the top-end variant.
