2026 Volkswagen Taigun Facelift Drive Review From Katra to Srinagar

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • We were part of the last leg of Volkswagen's Fire to Ice drive
  • The 230km drive had both the 1.5 DSG and 1.0 AT for review
  • Drive experience with a full load!
  • Scenic views, never ending tunnels and Kashmir valley for company

Volkswagen launched the updated Taigun facelift in India on the 14th of April earlier this year. As a facelift, while added features and design tweaks were part of the package, I was more interested to sample the new 8-speed gearbox on the 1.0-litre turbo petrol unit. Most owners opt for this smaller unit and for the right reasons. Volkswagen did take time coming up with the media drive - however, the "Fire to Ice" drive, as they call it, was well worth the wait.

We were part of the last leg of this media drive and undoubtedly, the most scenic one too. Kashmir is beautiful, no matter which month you pick. For us, we had pre monsoon showers for company and Katra itself were surrounded by cloud hugging peaks. Plus our hotel had a direct view of Maa Vaishnodevi - blessings in store for us!

Part 1 of the Drive : good old beast

29th morning, light showers and the Taigun facelift convoy was flagged off. Although my eyes were searching for the 1.0 AT, we were first given the keys to the 1.5 unit. This was a top spec version, dressed in GT trim and oh boy, did it look smashing.

Due to limited cars, all of us were sharing the drive with industry friends. This meant our Taigun too was fully loaded and we had an uphill run into the valley. No fret said the 1.5 unit and all the 148 horses under the hood. Mechanically, this package remains unchanged and thankfully so. The 'box ensures you are always in the right band and peak torque of 250Nm came handy multiple times, helping me overtake slower traffic without too much of an effort.

As we got into the drive, I started understanding the changes in the MY26 model. First, the driver's cockpit - new and bigger. This change alone makes the Taigun facelift feel far more premium and upmarket. The other screen sees a new UI and added features. Then there is the new panoramic sunroof - a feature we did use to breathe fresh Kashmiri air when traffic around was thin. And we did that responsibly.

The Jammu - Srinagar highway is home to numerous tunnels, ample 4-lane stretches and long flowing curves too. The 1.5 has never disappointed, and this time around too, it felt like a super energetic athlete, waiting to unleash and give it all. And yet, we had a displayed economy of 14 kmpl when we rolled into our lunch and swap stop after the last tunnel of Banihal. Not bad eh?

Part 2 of the Drive : hello 8-speed!

With our bellies full, we took the keys of the 1.0 AT and headed deeper into the valley. Srinagar's marvel, the Dal Lake was the destination in the Taigun's central infotainment screen. Initial impressions? The new Aisin-sourced 8-speed torque converter AT AQ300 (as its known internally) seemed smooth and effortless. You do get paddle shifters and 'S' mode as well but I let the gearbox do it all in the stock D mode. Now isn't this what 90% customers would do too?

The 1.0 AT 'cruising' into the valley

Upshifts felt smooth and with more ratios to play with, overtakes felt quicker. And once the right foot went from firm to light, 7th and 8th gears came in early. This is how bigger Germans feel while driving on open roads - the compact Taigun aping it well. . At highway speeds, I am very sure, the 1.0 AT will be highly efficiently. We saw 17-18 kmpl easily even with a load of passengers and suitcases. Triple digit speeds weren't a stress but I will admit, pedal to metal over 100km/h did make me miss the 1.5.

But all that changed once we got into the heart of Srinagar. Lower gears seem to be stacked closer (benefits of 8 speed over 6) and this was very helpful in start-stop traffic, through narrow congested streets and finding the quickest route to the lake. The engine no longer feels its capacity but a larger motor. We are also told that the new 8-speed AT has helped bump up the certified economy to over 19kmpl!

The 'new' design

Once at the beautiful Dal Lake, it was time to understand the new aesthetics better. I had to miss the launch event and hence this was the time to do it.

By the beautiful Dal Lake

First the rear - LED taillights with sequential turn indicators and a reworked bumper. Plus the illuminated logo - classy! The GT no doubt looks better but for those opting for the 1.0, the facelift design will get you noticed. The front has even more changes - new LED headlamps connected by an LED light bar and a reworked front bumper, and the illuminated logo too. The 2026 Taigun facelift looks better without it trying hard or being loud. This is exactly what its audience always wanted, right?

The 1.0 AT range starts from 13.8 lakh for the Highline version. Plus olkswagen has also introduced an assured buyback program for bookings received upto 31st May. Under this, you stand to get a residual value of 75% of the ex-showroom price for usage up to 3 years and 30,000 kms! Icing on the cake, eh?

Verdict

Volkswagen picked a very scenic route for us to experience the Taigun facelift. While the 1.5 remains as punchy as ever, the 1.0 AT is a very practical and useful option now. The added gears allow the gearbox to offer you best of both the worlds.
