Amidst the country-wide lockdown in India, the government has passed a new rule that autonomously increases the validity of all the expired bike and car documents. The new law will give a major relief to more than 23 crore individuals vehicle owners across the country. Also, about 1.2 crore trucks will benefit from the new rule. This is, as of now, extended till June 2020.

The Road Transport Ministry has announced that the validity of all the important and mandatory car documents has been increased to June 30, 2020. Documents that were about to get expired or were already expired in this period will have the increased validity and the people will not have to rush to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to get them renewed. The validity of documents that got expired from February 1, 2020, will now be valid until the end of June. It should be noted that India will remain under the lockdown until 14th April 2020 and the ministry has notified that there are no plans to extend the lockdown as of now.
The list of documents that fall under the extended category includes driving license, vehicle fitness certificates and state/national permits. It should be noted that pollution certificates and insurance policies do not fall under the extension period.
The ministry has done this to ensure that no motor vehicle owner gets harassed by the cops during the coronavirus outbreak that has affected the whole country.
Non-clause of the transport facility for transport vehicles for suspension of tax liability is currently in operation in a number of states and union territories in India. Similar efforts might be taken by the other states too. It will bring big relief to commercial vehicles like taxi, bus and other such vehicles. These vehicles are currently in non-operation mode due to the lockdown.
The ministry has asked all the states and union territories to implement the new rule immediately to ensure that no one gets affected due to the expired documents.
