As per the recent statement made by Mr Nitin Gadkari, Minister for Road Transport and Highways, India will be tollbooth-free in next two years. As per the plan, toll collection in the coming years will be based on the GPS (global positioning system) location of the vehicles. He further added that the government has finalised the new toll collection system which will be now implemented in a couple of years in close collaboration with the Russian government. It is currently being expected that total revenue of Rs 1.34 trillion can be collected by NHAI in five years after the new toll-collection system is implemented in the country.

To begin with, all the vehicles will be equipped with a GPS device which will be connected to the toll-collection system. Every vehicle will also be linked to a bank account from which the toll tax will be deducted every time a vehicle passes from the tollbooth. The new toll-collection system will help in reducing the congestion at toll booths. In addition, the new system will also help to make long commutes easier and stressfree by saving a considerable time which was earlier being spent in the long ques at the toll booth.

As per the minister, the GPS system will be used to track the vehicles and while the toll tax will be deducted from the respective bank accounts when a vehicle passes through a toll booth. Currently, India revolutionised the toll collection system by implementing the use of Fastags which are proving to be highly effective. Every vehicle which is equipped with a fastag can pass through the toll booth and the toll amount is currently being deducted from the wallet/bank account to which the fastag has been linked.
