Plying Old Petrol And Diesel Cars? Get Ready To Pay Rs 10,000 As Fine

In a bid to curb pollution, the Delhi Government Transport Department has set out new rules that old petrol and diesel cars will be fined Rs 10,000 or be seized on the spot. Don't worry as they have set a timeline of 10 years on diesel vehicles while for the petrol models it is 15 years.

The government has said that this new rule is here to bring encouragement to the recently announced scrappage policy. There have been instances where vehicles older than 10 and 15 years are running on Delhi roads and with this policy, strict action will be taken against them.

While the user generally has to pay the Rs 10,000 fine, the transport department can now either impound or dismantle the vehicle plying on the road. In total, only 1% of the vehicles have reached their end life stage as dated May 30, 2021.

This vehicle scrappage policy was announced in 2018 and since then the Delhi Government has four authorised vehicle scrappers. At present, an estimate of 3.5 lakh old vehicles are plying on Delhi roads and with the insufficient scrappage centre, it will take years to clean out the older cars.

So what do you think about this scrappage policy? I mean, we do have certain people who take care of their car and it is in pristine condition. Some are older than 10 years and still they pass every emission test and works better than the newer ones. Is it fair for the government to just scrap every vehicle or check the policy and scrutinise the pollution centres? Do let us know in the comment section below.
