The 250cc motorcycling segment in India has been buzzing with activity. While the KTM Duke 250 is the best seller here, the newly launched Suzuki 250s models have already started outselling the 250cc offerings from Yamaha, the FZ25 and the Fazer250. Why is this happening? Read on...
Though the Suzuki offerings are more expensive, carrying an ex-showroom price of Rs 1,59,800 for the naked and Rs 1,70,655 for the faired versions respectively, the bikes seem to offer a lot more. 258 of these were sold in November as compared to 168 units of the Yamaha 250s. The FZ25 is priced at Rs 1,36,380 and the faired version, Fazer 250 at Rs 1,44,680 - all prices being ex-showroom Delhi.

The 250cc engine offered on the Suzuki models is a lot more potent. At 26.5 PS, it not only generates 26% more power but also offers 13% higher torque. These figures give the Suzuki Gixxer 250 and Gixxer SF 250 excellent performance with some riders reporting a top speed in excess of 150 km/h! This factor of performance alone ends up negating the price difference to an extent.

Next, the Suzuki 250s look far better and have a more aggressive design theme as compared to that of the Yamaha offerings. Likewise, the Gixxer 250s come with wider tyres at both front and the rear. Even the disc brakes are bigger to better braking performance. For young buyers, the sportier design along with wider wheels and larges discs does make them fall for the Gixxer 250 and Gixxer SF 250. Further, as seen below, Suzuki is also offering festive offers on the 250 to sweeten the deal.

Just to add, if we factor in the 220cc offerings from Bajaj, then this segment is led by the Pulsar 220. Bajaj sold over 5.5k Pulsar 220s in the month of November alone!
