20,000 Km Clocked : A Skoda Kylaq Owner's Honest Verdict

Buying a car is part childhood dream, part proof of how far you've come - and it all becomes real the moment you pull the cloth off your very own car. There's a different kind of feeling that washes over you as your hands meet the wheel, knowing every bit of it was earned, not given.

Lakshya Saroha, my colleague, who is equally mad about automobiles, found his search for a car ending at a Skoda touchpoint in his hometown. He looked around for a month, considering the Hyundai i20, Mahindra XUV 3XO, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, and Skoda Kylaq. Let’s deep dive and check what made Lakshya choose this car over the other worthy rivals.

The Car, The Variant and The Timeline

Kylaq

Lakshya bought his Kylaq in August 2025. The variant he found best suited for him was the Prestige, and the additional thing he bought along with the car was a 2-year service package. The cost he paid for the service package was Rs. 13,698. This includes free servicing for two years.

The owner has clocked 20,000 km so far, and he has been able to get a mileage of 11-11.5 kmpl in the city, while on the highway it is 17-18 kmpl. He took his car for its first service at 15,000 km. However, the service was free due to the service package. The remaining services will be carried out on time.

Skoda's Current Offerings

Skoda offers an optional 4-year maintenance package for the Kylaq, helping owners manage servicing costs with fixed pricing. The plan starts at Rs. 27,499 for the 1.0 TSI MT and Rs. 40,599 for the 1.0 TSI AT if purchased within 34 days of delivery. It covers all major scheduled service items, including engine oil and filter changes, brake fluid, spark plugs, air, pollen, and fuel filters, making it a worthwhile option for hassle-free ownership.

It covers essential services such as basic and additional vehicle inspections, engine oil and oil filter replacement, drain plug and washer replacement, as well as the replacement of air, pollen, and fuel filters. The package also includes spark plug and brake fluid replacement, V-belt replacement, Haldex coupling oil replacement (where applicable), and automatic transmission fluid (ATF) along with transmission filter replacement, ensuring the vehicle remains in optimal condition throughout the coverage period.

How Much to Pay Without a Package?

Skoda offers a complimentary first service at 10,000 km. Thereafter, servicing is chargeable at authorised service centres based on a fixed maintenance schedule. The first service is free of labour charges and is covered by the company. The standard warranty is valid for up to 5 years or 1,25,000 km. Skoda also offers Supercare maintenance packages starting from ₹14,999, covering essential inspections and replacements, along with extended warranty options that provide coverage for up to 6 years or 1,50,000 km.

Why Did He Choose the Kylaq?

Lakshya doesn't want to compromise on one thing, and that's driving dynamics. He loves a car that gives the best driving experience, and we all know Skoda/Volkswagen for their top-notch engineering. Previously, he has owned cars from the VW Group, so he wanted the same experience this time too. Buying any other brand would have been a downgrade for him.

Kylaq in One Word

Valedictorian – The top-performing student in an academic graduating class. That's what the Kylaq means to Lakshya.

It is true in some sense because it is clearly visible in the sales reports as well. The Skoda Kylaq has recorded cumulative sales of 66,826 units in India since its launch in January 2025 through May 2026.

The compact SUV enjoyed a strong start, with monthly sales peaking at 5,364 units in April 2025. Sales moderated during the second half of 2025 before stabilising in 2026, with the model registering 3,220 units in January, climbing to 4,670 units in March, and ending the available data period with 3,443 units in May 2026. Despite the fluctuations, the Kylaq has consistently maintained monthly volumes in the 3,000–5,000 unit range, highlighting steady demand in the highly competitive compact SUV segment.

Pros & Cons of Kylaq

According to Lakshya, the pros of the Skoda Kylaq are "Driving Nirvana, a refined and punchy 1.0L TSI engine, and tank-like build quality." There is no doubt about the driving quality that the Kylaq offers. We experienced this while reviewing the car in our garage too. The engine is very refined, and there is linear power delivery as well. If you are driving in city traffic, the car runs silently, and if you want a punch while overtaking on the highway, the car offers on-point power.

In terms of safety, the build quality of the Skoda Kylaq is completely different, securing a 5-star rating in BNCAP for both adult and child occupant protection.

"The grass is not always greener at some places. The Skoda Kylaq has some cons as well," said Lakshya. He feels the limited service touchpoints hold more people back from buying a Skoda vehicle. Also, the spare parts for the Skoda are quite expensive.

Lakshya has a family of four, so he found the Kylaq very comfortable. However, things changed when he planned a long trip from Delhi to Rishikesh with his four friends. His friends kept complaining about the space crunch in the second row. Only then did he realise that the second row is best suited for two people.

Features and Usability

The most usable features, as per the owner of the SUV, are paddle shifters, ventilated seats, power-adjustable seats, and a cooled glovebox. These features have proven to be the most practical and regularly used in daily life, each adding genuine comfort and convenience on every drive. Paddle shifters make highway driving and overtakes more engaging, while the ventilated seats are a blessing during hot summer days. The power-adjustable seats help find a comfortable driving position with ease, and the cooled glovebox is a handy touch for keeping water bottles cool on long drives.

The sunroof and in-built Skoda apps are features the owner rarely uses. The sunroof mostly stays shut due to the heat and dust, while the connected car apps have been replaced by the more familiar Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. They look good on the feature list but see very little use in daily life.

End Note

The Skoda Kylaq is hitting a sweet spot in the market, balancing buyers' choices and the brand's reputation at the same time. People like Lakshya, who don't want to compromise on the performance of their car, can add the Skoda Kylaq to their shortlist while making a buying decision.

Also, buying a car is one thing, and quietly smiling while staring at your car is another. Because after a hard, tiring day at work, it's your car that will make you smile in the parking lot.
