Mahindra Thar OG: New Features Explained

Mahindra Thar OG is the name of the facelifted version of the Mahindra Thar, which was launched at a starting price of Rs 10.32 lakh (ex-showroom). It now comes with a host of internal changes, which make it a better off-roader, a daily commuter, and a lifestyle-focused SUV. Below we have listed all the new changes, and after reading them, you won't feel like this is a facelift but a generational update. So, let's begin.

Mahindra Thar OG New Features

New Platfrom

The biggest change is the new 4th-gen M_Glyde platform, which replaces the previous-generation architecture. It is shared with the Mahindra Thar Roxx and brings greater torsional rigidity, which should make the Thar OG feel more stable, particularly at higher speeds and through corners.

But the platform isn't the only major change. Mahindra has also introduced DAVINCI damping technology, paired with a new five-link PENTALINK rear suspension. In simple terms, this setup is designed to improve ride comfort while keeping the SUV better controlled over rough roads and during cornering. The DAVINCI damping technology was first introduced on the XUV 7XO and now makes its way to a ladder-frame SUV for the first time. So, would you still call this a facelift?

Electronic Lock Differential

The second big update is the electronic locking differential, although it is available only on the rear axle. This is a significant addition for people who actually plan to use the Thar for hardcore off-roading. For those unfamiliar with it, the electronic locker locks the rear differential, limiting the speed difference between the two rear wheels and helping maintain drive to the wheel with better traction. This is particularly useful when tackling rocks or other uneven terrain, where one wheel may have grip while the other is struggling. With the Thar OG, switching on the locker can help it crawl through situations where an open differential could leave it stuck.

Terrain Modes

With the Thar OG, you get a 10.25-inch infotainment screen that also houses the controls for the new Terrain Modes. These include Mud, Sand and Snow, with each mode adjusting the car's throttle response and traction control to suit the terrain. So, these aren't just cosmetic drive modes - the car actually changes how it responds based on the selected mode. For instance, traction control intervention and throttle response are adjusted to help the SUV maintain traction and get through difficult surfaces more easily.

Thar OG Gets More Powerful Engines

The Mahindra Thar OG gets a power upgrade with this facelift, specifically for the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines, while the 1.5-litre diesel retains its existing power and torque figures. Before getting into the new output figures, it is worth noting that the 2.2-litre diesel is now available with RWD, whereas it was previously offered only with a 4WD setup.

Saftey Upgrade

The outgoing Mahindra Thar was criticised for offering only two airbags, which feels dated by 2026 standards. With this update, the Thar OG gets six airbags, but only on the top-spec ZXT, while the lower variants continue with two airbags. It also gets disc brakes on all four wheels, front parking sensors and TPMS. However, features such as a 360-degree camera and Level 2 ADAS are still missing, despite being expected at this price point.

Exterior Changes

2 new colour options; Artemis Silver and Jeans Blue along with six existing colours. All new body coloured grille with Thar lettering on the right top. Other changes are new LED headlamps with inverted C shape LED DRLs. Moreover, the fog-lamps have placed below the indicators, and that brings us to the bumper which is all new. At side you'll see the badging of Thar OG, and below it you'll see the newly designed five spoke 19 inch alloy wheels. These are all the new changes made to the exterior.

Interior Changes

The cabin now gets truffle-brown leatherette upholstery, giving it a more sophisticated look. Other additions include rear AC vents, second-row cupholders with a 12V socket, and a new steering wheel shared with other Mahindra SUVs. The biggest change, however, is the switch from hydraulic to electronic power steering, making the Thar significantly lighter and easier to manoeuvre, especially in tight city spaces.
