KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- Petrol buyers get the widest access to top-end and Ultra variants
- Diesel buyers retain strong mid-variant options but miss out on Ultra trims
- Automatic gearbox seekers are well served in both petrol and diesel, except at entry-level trims
With the introduction of the new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, Tata Motors has significantly expanded the powertrain choices for its flagship SUVs. However, the availability of petrol and diesel engines across variants differs between the Tata Safari and Tata Harrier, making it important for buyers to understand which combinations are actually on sale. In this section, we take a look at the variants line-up in terms of the engine options on offer along with the gearbox options across the trim line-up. The variant and transmission spread clearly shows Tata's petrol-first strategy for the Tata Safari, especially at the premium end of the lineup. While both petrol and diesel engines are widely available across mid-level variants, all Ultra and Ultra Red trims are exclusive to the petrol powertrain, offered with both manual and automatic gearboxes. Diesel buyers, on the other hand, retain access to most mid and upper variants, including Stealth editions, but miss out on the flagship Ultra trims altogether. Entry-level buyers are limited to manual transmissions regardless of fuel type, while automatic options open up from the Pure X variant onwards. Overall, buyers seeking the most feature-rich and future-ready Safari variants will have to opt for the petrol engine.

The variant-wise powertrain spread of the Tata Harrier again mimics the trends seen with the Safari, at least for now. While both petrol and diesel engines are widely available across most mid-level variants with manual and automatic transmissions, the Fearless Ultra and Fearless Ultra Red trims are offered exclusively with the recently launched petrol engine, in both manual and automatic forms. Diesel buyers retain access to a broad selection of variants, including Stealth editions, but miss out on the flagship Ultra trims. Entry-level buyers are restricted to manual gearboxes, regardless of fuel type.
Verdict
Tata Motors has clearly structured the Harrier and Safari lineup to push petrol powertrains at the premium end, while keeping diesel relevant for buyers looking for torque and long-distance use. Understanding this variant-wise strategy helps buyers shortlist the right trim without confusion and avoid expecting combinations that simply aren't on sale. As for the diesel Ultra trims, even though nothing has been officially mentioned, it only makes sense to extend those to the diesel ones as well, considering that a vehicle this size, mostly is prefered with an oil burner.
