Toyota Innova Hycross Detailed Review

• Innova Hycross Exterior

  The cabin of the HyCross is a big highlight and justifies the sticker price attached to this premium MPV. The layout of the fascia is very driver centric and the column mounted gear lever ends up liberating a lot of space between the front two seats. The dual tone dark theme works well for the ‘plush’ factor and at the same time, the massive panoramic sunroof in the top models ends up making the interiors very airy. Top models include cooled seats as well. 

  The second row is where all the action is. The HyCross is available with a choice of both individual captain seats as well as a fixed bench here. The captain seats get power function for the top versions, something that is going to be a great pull factor. Happy to report that space here is immense. The same story repeats itself in the 3rd row which offers the best space in the segment. Even tall individuals can be seated here without much issues. 

• Innova Hycross Interior

  The HyCross and Crysta do share the ‘Innova’ name but have nothing in common when it comes to the way they look. The HyCross is a larger vehicle than the Crysta and gets a new design theme all together. In terms of length, it longer than other 3 row vehicles like the Safari and XUV700 as well. The front is dominated by a raised bonnet, a huge grille and chrome add-ons around the grille and the fog lamp area. These are reserved for the top end trims, which also get LED DRLs by the way. Side profile is where you notice the mass of the vehicle and the longish wheelbase too. 

  The HyCross also gets flared wheel arches which add a touch of muscle. It is only the top end versions that come with 18” inch alloy wheels. The lower models with 16 or 17” rims do no look proportionate at all. But then, this is more MPV than SUV and we aren’t complaining on that account. The rear is unique and gets a ‘raised’ stance treatment. The wrap around tail lamps are large and there is prominent version and fuel type badging at the rear. The HyCross is sold in seven colour options but none of these are bold - no shade of red or blue on offer here. The seven colorus include two shades of white, three shades of black and one each of silver and bronze.

• Innova Hycross Engine

  Toyota is offering a choice of two engines on the HyCross. As expected there is no diesel on offer. The first unit is a pure petrol engine with a capacity of 1987cc. This puts out 173 bhp of power and 209 Nm of torque. It is sold with an automatic gearbox option only and comes with an ARAI certified economy of 16.3 kmpl making it the best in segment. The second engine option is the strong hybrid unit. This comes with a similar capacity engine but additionally, get the extra boost from the electric motor. This motor is powered by a 1.7 kWh battery pack and when this pack has enough juice, the HyCross goes into pure EV mode, thereby shutting off the engine. This is the reason why it comes with a certified economy of over 23 kmpl! As is the case with all strong hybrid motors in India, this one too is paired to an automatic gearbox. In real world driving, you can expect an easy 20 kmpl plus. Regen is part of the set-up and every time you lift your right pedal or brake, energy gets transferred and is used to power back the batteries. 

• Innova Hycross Features

  This the most feature loaded Toyota to be on sale in India. The top end versions get LED lights all around. Up front on the inside, you get seat ventilation, paddle shifters, full digital console, 360 camera view, 8-way power seat for driver, electro chromatic inner review view mirror, 25.6cm touchscreen infotainment, leather seats etc. For rear passengers, you have powered Ottoman seats for the 2nd row, panoramic sunroof, 9 speaker JBL system, rear sunshades, powered back door etc. Other features include Toyota’s Safety Sense (ADAS), 6 Airbags, electronic stability control etc.
