EV Charging Stations May Be Powered By Renewable Energy!

The electric mobility wave has taken over the entire country. Multiple automotive manufacturers have begun setting up dedicated manufacturing facilities for electric vehicle production. This initiative is being taken to curb the pollution due to internal combustion engines. As the combustion of fossil fuels increases the amount of pollutants in the atmosphere, the government has decided to promote the clean air propaganda. As electric vehicles require electricity to charge, EV charging stations are being set up. Electric powertrains are more eco-friendly as compared to internal combustion engines, but here's the catch.

The basic initiative is to make India a carbon free country. Electric vehicles don't have tailpipe emissions, but they require electricity to be charged which may or may not be polluting depending upon the source of generation. In a country like India, 76 per cent of the electricity is generated using coal reserves, and the rest using renewable resources out of which hydropower constitutes a 19 per cent share. As more than three-fourth of the electricity is generated by fossil fuels, electric vehicle charging may indirectly contribute to the carbon emissions caused.

To curb the overuse of electricity generated from coal reserves to charge electric vehicles, the government has issued a policy directive according to which any consumer above 100 kW hour of load should source electricity from a renewable source. This policy implies on residential societies, commercial complexes and charging stations where the electricity consumption can be much higher. This threshold of 100 kW hour load for consumers has been issued to curb emissions as this would help electric vehicles to be powered by green energy.

This initiative is a first of its kind policy all across the world. As per the authorities at Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), this policy can frame the future of electric vehicles in India and truly has the potential to reduce emissions. This electric vehicle charging infrastructure would help moving towards an ecofriendly electricity usage like in Europe where the customers are informed the source of electricity to charge their vehicles.

ATUM EV Charging Stations

ATUM is one such organisation which is setting up electric vehicle charging stations which are powered entirely by solar energy and there are many more electric charging companies coming up.
