The Punch EV received a major facelift earlier this year, and with the facelift, the brand also introduced the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model. The BaaS model has become a new norm in the electric car market, with almost every manufacturer now offering BaaS as part of their EV buying options. Battery-as-a-Service offers better flexibility to customers, allowing them to choose battery rental as per their usage and pay only for the chassis, or in other words, the car itself. In this article, we’ll look at the Tata Punch EV BaaS pricing and how much you can save if you choose this buying option for the Punch EV.

What is BaaS?

While buying an EV, the biggest challenge is the high initial cost of the vehicle. Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS), as the name suggests, offers customers an option to use the battery as a service. This means the customer only buys the car and pays for the vehicle initially while using the battery on a subscription basis depending on their usage.

For example, the initial cost of the Tata Punch EV with the battery is Rs 9.69 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base variant. Now, if someone chooses to buy it with the BaaS option, the cost of the vehicle drops to Rs 6.49 lakh (ex-showroom). This saves approximately Rs 3.2 lakh in the initial ex-showroom cost of the vehicle.

The Tata Punch EV is available with two battery pack options and a total of six variants. The BaaS pricing starts at Rs 6.49 lakh + Rs 2.60 per km as a battery charge. The base variant with the battery is priced at Rs 9.69 lakh (ex-showroom). If we divide this cost, it comes to Rs 6.49 lakh for the car and Rs 3.20 lakh for the battery.

Now, assuming this pricing and a general car loan tenure of 5 years and a battery loan tenure of 8 years, the EMI breakdown is as follows:

Now, if we consider the battery EMI of the base model, which is Rs 4,688, and divide it by an average monthly running of approximately 1,800 km, the per-km cost will turn out to be Rs 2.60 per km.

How Does Dual-Finance Under BaaS Work?

Under the BaaS structure, customers have to pay two EMIs, but this eases the burden of a single large EMI. By dividing the ownership cost into two parts, customers avoid financing the entire amount together.

The loan for the car works on the standard vehicle loan process and follows a standard tenure of 5 years. However, the battery loan can be extended to a longer duration to ease the financial burden and make the EMIs more accessible. Both EMIs work simultaneously, but this structure separates the battery and vehicle costs, making EV ownership more flexible.

If we consider the benefits of this model, customers can enjoy lower monthly EMIs by extending the battery loan tenure for a longer duration or as per their usage. The overall cost also comes down, making EV ownership more accessible. Some finance partners can offer up to 100% battery financing, which can help customers minimise the upfront cost of both the vehicle and the battery. Additionally, customers can choose to foreclose the loans individually based on their requirements.

The Tata Punch EV is available with two battery pack options: a 30 kWh unit and a 40 kWh unit. The smaller 30 kWh variant produces 65 kW of power and 154 Nm of peak torque. It has an ARAI-claimed range of up to 375 km, while the C75 real-world range is around 260-275 km.

The 40 kWh version, on the other hand, produces 95 kW of peak power and 215 Nm of torque. This version offers an ARAI-claimed range of 468 km and a C75 real-world range of 335-355 km on a single charge. The larger 40 kWh variant also supports 1.5C fast charging, which can charge the EV using a DC charger to add up to 135 km of range in just 15 minutes.

On the features front, it comes equipped with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging, automatic climate control, an electric sunroof, a 360-degree camera, connected car features, an electric parking brake, among other convenience and safety features.

Our Verdict

The Tata Punch EV BaaS model is a smart approach to making EV ownership easy and more accessible for budget-conscious buyers. The lower upfront cost of the vehicle and the battery is one of the biggest advantages of the BaaS model, and by splitting the cost of the battery and vehicle, customers can get a flexible option to pay the EMI and manage their finances well. However, this model is perfect for those who have higher monthly running costs and want to ease out on the running cost. The per-kilometre battery cost becomes justifiable when the monthly running is high. For buyers with low usage or low running, the battery rental makes no sense; regular ownership and a single EMI make more sense to avoid the recurring battery cost, as they won’t be able to cover the cost with their running. The BaaS gives flexibility, but customers need to understand the ownership process and analyse their monthly running before making the buying decision.
