Kinetic DX+ First Ride Review, EV Beyond What Expected

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • 2.6 kWh battery with 105 km range.
  • 4.78 kW hub motor with multiple modes.
  • Telescopic forks and dual rear shock absorbers.
  • Front disc and rear drum braking setup.

Kinetic has launched the DX+, a scooter that blends nostalgic design with modern electric technology. While it retains the familiar body style of the classic DX from the 1990s, the real transformation lies beneath - an electric hub motor powers the new DX+. Priced at Rs. 1.17 lakh (ex-showroom), Kinetic is aiming to revive its legacy with this model.

The big question is whether the DX+ worthy to handle this responsibility of reviving the brand? I rode Kinetic DX+ and here's my first impression of the electric scooter. Meanwhile, make sure to join the 91Wheels WhatsApp Channel to never miss out on automotive updates.

Design

The Kinetic DX+ keeps things simple, drawing heavy inspiration from the original DX scooter of the '90s. The retro design is complemented by subtle modern touches, most notably the all-LED headlamp setup.

The handlebar design feels familiar, but the switchgear has been updated for the electric era. It now includes dedicated controls for ride modes, reverse mode, cruise control, indicators, and boot release - making everyday usage more convenient.

On the sides, a 3D 'DX+' badge adds a touch of identity, while the rear features a large LED tail lamp and a practical grab rail. The body is largely metallic, lending a sturdy feel. However, the front cowl could have better fit and finish. Apart from that, the panel quality is solid, with no major gaps or inconsistencies.

Features & Hardware

The DX+ comes equipped with a smart key and an 8.8-inch digital display that shows essential information like speed, riding mode, odometer, and battery percentage. While it also displays estimated range, its accuracy couldn't be fully assessed during the short ride duration.

Built mainly for city commuting, the hardware setup is straight forward. It features telescopic front forks and dual rear shock absorbers. The scooter rides on 12-inch wheels, with braking handled by a front disc and a rear drum brake.

Ride, Performance & Handling

The DX+ offers a well-balanced and approachable riding experience. The seat is wide and comfortable, and the floorboard provides ample space - even for taller riders.

Handling is predictable, making it easy to maneuver in urban conditions. The suspension does a commendable job of absorbing potholes and speed breakers, ensuring a comfortable ride on rough roads. The brakes provide adequate stopping power, especially in Sport (Turbo) mode.

Powering the scooter is a 2.6 kWh fixed battery pack, delivering a claimed range of 105 km. It is paired with a motor producing 4.78 kW (6.4 HP).

The scooter offers three riding modes:

Range Mode Limits speed to around 45-50 kmph. Suitable for relaxed rides, but can feel slow in busy traffic.
Power Mode Offers a top speed of 75-80 kmph, making it more practical for daily commuting.
Turbo Mode Provides the best performance with a top speed up to 90 kmph and is ideal for faster city roads where higher speeds are needed.

Overall, the DX+ feels best suited for daily commutes of around 80-85 km.

Practicality

In terms of usability, the DX+ scores well. It offers 37 litres of under-seat storage, enough to fit one full-face helmet and one half-face helmet. A luggage hook further adds to its practicality for everyday use.

Verdict

The Kinetic DX+ blends retro charm with modern EV tech, offering a comfortable ride, practical features, and decent city performance. However, at Rs. 1.17 lakh, it faces stiff competition and concerns around service reach and brand trust. While its a well-rounded urban scooter, it alone may not be enough to fully revive Kinetics legacy in the EV space.
