Skoda Auto India's story changed on December 2nd, 2024, the day they launched their first-ever sub-4 metre SUV, the Skoda Kylaq. Despite being the smaller sibling of the Skoda Kushaq, it is taller, wider, and quicker, all thanks to its 63 kg weight advantage. But, there is more to its success than specs alone, which is what we are going to talk about in this long-term ownership review. Before we start, make sure to join our 91Wheels Whatsapp Channel to never miss out on the latest automotive updates.

My Skoda Kylaq - Ownership Experience

Skoda Kylaq

I own the Skoda Kylaq Prestige Automatic in Lava Blue. purchased on 15 August 2025. I bought this vehicle before the GST revision and before Skoda extended the free service package to four years, both of which would have reduced my effective cost of ownership. It's been over 8 months and I have covered around 19,000 km. The first service at 10,000 km flagged one thing: engine oil was low and needed a top-up. Everything else was fine.

Positives

It Drives Exceptionally Well

If driving for you isn't just about commuting in comfort or luxury, but actually communicating with the car, revving high to know the engine's limits, or taking sharp turns without slowing down, then you can go for the Skoda Kylaq. It truly is a tempting and affordable enthusiast's car that starts at just Rs 7.59 lakh (ex-showroom).

The MQB-A0-IN platform is the real king here. It allows the driver to push the car hard into corners, and even when you feel it's time to back off, the car feels composed and eager. Handling is precise yet light enough for daily commutes and it is among the most rewarding in the sub-4-metre segment.

Suspension Tuning

If you have driven the Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun, you'll know how firm they feel on bad roads, even small potholes can feel jarring at city speeds. That's because those SUVs prioritise handling sharpness over ride comfort.

Skoda took customer feedback seriously with the Kylaq and softened the suspension tune. On broken roads, it absorbs bumps more progressively, noticeably better than its siblings. Overall, this feels like a made-for-India car as it strikes a balance between being a family vehicle and a fun-to-drive SUV.

Automatic Gearbox

Kylaq

Unlike its rivals, which come with half-automatics like AMT or iVT, this one is equipped with a real automatic, which is a 6-speed torque converter. The gear shifts are smooth, and at high speeds, it changes gears swiftly, unlike its rivals, which feel jerkier and extremely slow. Now, another positive point is that it comes with paddle shifters, so if you want to take full control, you can use them.

Another characteristic of this transmission is that when you put the car into D mode and lift your right foot off the brake, it doesn't jump ahead, but smoothly moves forward. This was not the case with previous German cars, as they used to panic drivers in bumper-to-bumper traffic because of this mechanism. This is a major point and adds to the great driving experience.

Engine & Mileage

Skoda Kylaq

The 1.0L TSI engine inside this car received the International Engine of the Year 2018 award, and it certainly doesn't feel like a mere 999cc engine because of the way it pulls. Easily, it can outperform any 1.5L naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine when it comes to speed. That's because of the advanced engineering behind it, and once it crosses 2,000 RPM, it simply takes off.

Skoda Kylaq

After 19,000 km, I can say this engine is at its best on long drives. At 95-100 km/h, the revs sit between 1,800 and 1,900 rpm, and the car returns upwards of 16.5 kmpl consistently. Drop to around 85 km/h and
that can climb past 19 kmpl. These numbers put the long-standing perception of TSI engines being fuel-hungry firmly to rest.

Design

The Skoda Auto Kylaq's design is very European in nature, featuring sharp and clean lines with almost no unnecessary curves. From no angle does it appear to be shouting for attention or trying too hard to make a style statement. Instead, it looks mature and butch, which means the design is unlikely to feel outdated even after several years, as it avoids trendy styling elements such as connected DRLs, excessive chrome, or oversized grilles.

Unlike many of its rivals, which try too hard to grab attention with overly aggressive lighting elements and radical front-end designs, the Kylaq maintains a subtle yet timeless appearance. I wanted a car that would age gracefully, and that is exactly why I chose this one. The exceptional paint quality further enhances its rich and premium appeal.

Built Like A Tank

Yes, this is a safe car, and it has scored a 5-star rating in the Bharat NCAP crash test. But safety is not just about numbers on paper. The moment you pull the door handle and open the door, you can feel the heft and solidity of the car, and when you shut it, the reassuring thud instantly tells you that you are inside a well-built vehicle. That confidence only increases once you start driving it. The car feels incredibly sturdy and well-planted on the road, no matter the speed. All these factors, combined with the safety features on offer, constantly reassure you that you have made the right choice for yourself and your family.

Negatives

Expensive Spare Parts

Big negative aspect of this car is the extremely high cost of spare parts, especially when compared to its rivals. Recently, my windshield got cracked, and when I took the car to the service centre, the service advisor quoted around Rs 14,500 just for the windshield. Thankfully, it was covered under insurance, but that incident clearly showed how expensive the parts really are.

So yes, while the car feels premium, solid, and sophisticated, maintaining a Skoda Auto does stay true to its reputation of burning a sizeable hole in your pocket. Compared to many rivals, the ownership costs here are definitely on the higher side.

Misses On Features

Out of all its strengths, the Kylaq has one clear drawback that could be a deal-breaker - it lags behind on features. Rivals simply offer more. The Kia Syros brings a panoramic sunroof, Harman Kardon speakers, a 30-inch Trinity panoramic display, and even rear-ventilated seats. The new Hyundai Venue packs ADAS, rear disc brakes, a rear sunshade, and multiple drive and traction modes. If technology is your priority, the Koreans are ahead - and they know it.

City Fuel Efficiency

Another downside of this car is its fuel efficiency in heavy traffic conditions. While the mileage on highways is genuinely impressive, things change drastically once you enter bumper-to-bumper roads. Because of the turbo-petrol engine, the car usually struggles to deliver more than 10-11 kmpl in regular stop-go usage, and at times, I have even seen figures dropping to around 4-5 kmpl.

So, even if you drive with a light foot and try to be as gentle as possible on the throttle, don't expect great fuel economy in congested conditions. This is simply one of the compromises that comes with owning a small turbocharged engine.

In such cases, you can opt for the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Kia Sonet 1.2L Petrol, and Maruti Fronx 1.2L, as they are equipped with naturally aspirated engines. Even in heavy city traffic, they can deliver upwards of 13 km/l, which makes them ideal for this purpose.

Best For 4 People Only

The Kylaq is comfortably a four-person car. The second row simply isn't wide enough for three adults on longer drives, realistically, only a child under 10 fits in the middle seat for any real distance. Families of five
should consider this carefully before buying. Rear legroom is adequate but not generous. The snug cabin contributes to its sporty feel, but if rear passenger comfort is a priority, this is a real compromise.

Finish & Feature Concerns

The wireless charging pad in my car has never worked properly, and even the people at the service centre have not been able to provide a solution for it. It simply fails to charge the phone, not even by 1%. So, it really makes you question why this feature was added in the first place, especially when the company heavily markets it and offers it in the top-spec variant as a highlight feature.

The power window motors produce an audible crackling noise during operation. Skoda service says it's within normal parameters, but it is inconsistent with the otherwise solid feel of the cabin. The bonnet has no acoustic insulation, and there is no underbody engine bay cover. Both are omissions that are noticeable at this price point.

Which Variant You Should Buy?

Skoda Auto offers the Kylaq in six variants - Classic, Classic+, Signature, Signature+, Prestige, and Prestige+. The newly introduced Classic+ and Prestige+ add a few extra features over their standard versions.

For the full package, ventilated and electrically adjustable front seats, 17-inch dual-tone alloys, LED fog lamps with cornering function, ambient lighting, the Prestige+ is the pick.

For most buyers, though, the Signature variant is the sweet spot. It comes with alloy wheels, TPMS, rear AC vents, rear wiper and defogger, cooled glovebox, front armrest, a touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, rear USB ports, and paddle shifters on the automatic. For most buyers, that's a complete car.

Verdict

Eight months and 19,000 km in, the Kylaq has delivered on its promise more often than not. Go for it if you want a safe, well-engineered compact SUV that drives with genuine enthusiasm and handles family duties without losing its driving character. The one thing it can't do comfortably is seat five adults.

Buy it if: You're a family of four who wants an engaging, well-built car with solid highway efficiency and European driving manners at a reasonable price.

Skip it if: You regularly travel with five adults, city fuel economy is your primary concern, or you're sensitive to higher spare parts and maintenance costs.

Recommended variant: Signature for most buyers. Signature+ automatic if you commute daily and want a fuller feature set without going to Prestige+ prices.
