Government To Mandate ABS and Two Helmets for All New Two-Wheelers in India

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • ABS now mandatory on all new two-wheelers, regardless of engine size
  • Two BIS-certified helmets must be provided with every new bike or scooter

In a landmark move aimed at improving road safety in India, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has approved a major update. Every two-wheeler sold in the country comes equipped with an Anti-lock braking system and two helmets. But what does this mean for you as a buyer? Will your next two-wheeler cost more? What's Changing?

The government's new directive makes two-wheeler safety features mandatory with the sale of every new two-wheeler in India:

  • Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) must now be installed on all bikes and scooters, irrespective of their engine size. Earlier, this was only required for the scooters and motorcycles above 125cc.
  • Two BIS-certified (ISI Marked) helmets must be provided, one for the rider and one for the pillion. These helmets must meet safety standards and cannot be substituted with cheaper or uncertified alternatives. However, earlier, we got only one helmet with any new purchase.

Moreover, all these regulations apply across all segments, from budget commuters to premium motorcycles, which ensures that safety is no longer limited to higher-end models.

Why It Matters?

India, unfortunately, ranks among the highest in the number of deaths caused due to road accidents, and the majority constitutes the two-wheeler segment. In 2022 alone, over 70,000 riders lost their lives in road accidents. It's a daunting number that needs to be reduced. By mandating ABS universally, braking distances can be better controlled, especially on slippery or uneven surfaces. Meanwhile, ensuring two certified helmets with every new vehicle promotes rider and pillion safety, an often-ignored aspect in Indian commuting.

Will This Affect Prices?

In short, yes. Manufacturers may revise pricing, especially in the entry-level two-wheeler segment, to accommodate the cost of two helmets and standard ABS. But what's important is to see this as an investment in your safety rather than a price hike. On the flip side, this means that you no longer need to bargain for or buy helmets separately. Now, every new two-wheeler will come bundled with two certified helmets straight from the dealership, offering peace of mind from the first ride.

Verdict

The new mandate is a major step toward making Indian roads safer for two-wheeler riders. By enforcing ABS and dual helmet inclusion across all segments, the government is pushing for safety to be a standard, not an option. While prices may see a slight bump, the added protection and peace of mind make it a worthwhile upgrade for every rider and pillion as well.
