  • High-speed e-scooters are generally costly

The era of EVs is here. Everywhere we look around, EVs are running blatantly. However, a few years ago we could only imagine EVs like this. The first explosion of EVs took place via low-speed electric scooters. Tiny, nimble, silent, & efficient; these scooters did more than expected. Catering to their popularity, high-speed e-scooters entered the segment. However, there is a major difference between these two e-scooter types. Read the top differences between them below to know which one should you buy.

1. Performance Difference

High-speed e-scooters offer more performance.

The first & foremost difference is the performance. As the name suggests, low-speed e-scooters mean limited speed. Hence, EVs like Hero Flash comes with a 25 kmph speed limit. This speed limit is factory set as they can not perform beyond it. Hence, these scooters are slow on open roads & one might not feel the gist of their purpose. On the other hand, high-speed scooters like Ather 450X Gen 3 can perform faster than expected. In fact, some e-scooters can do up to 100 kmph. Hence, a lot of buyers tend to opt for them. However, it is inside bumper-to-bumper traffic, where the low-speed e-scooters perform glitch-free.

2. Specifications Difference

Ola S1
High-speed e-scooters offer better specifications.

As the performance is varied; it happens due to the electric motor difference. Why? Well, because the low-speed e-scooters have an electric motor limitation. These scooters can not surpass the 250W limit of electric motors. This limit has been set by the government for keeping the cost burden down on the makers. Additionally, the controlled performance is another reason behind it. However, the high-speed e-scooters come equipped with large electric motors. These electric motors can range up to 5kW in power. Hence, these scooters offer quick performance.

3. Registration vs No-Registration

Low-speed e-scooters require no registration to be used.

The biggest pro of low-speed electric scooters is that they do not require registration. Hence, the RTO charges & other expenses are saved for customers. Additionally, these scooters require no valid driving license to use. Hence, a lot of teenagers use these as mopeds to cover their commute. However, high-speed e-scooters are treated like any other ICE-powered scooter. These require registration as well as a valid driving license to be used.

4. Riding Range Difference

Bajaj Chetak
High-speed e-scooters offer more riding range.

One of the major differences between these scooters is their riding range. The low-speed e-scooters come with a very less riding range. All thanks to the electric motor limitations, at max they can do 40-50 km per charge. However, this isn't the case with high-speed e-scooters. Products like Ola S1 Pro can do up to 170 km per charge. Hence, customers with high usage prefer to opt for high-speed e-scooters.

5. Features & Cost

Hero Electric
Low-speed e-scooters are marginally cheap to buy than high-speed e-scooters.

As EVs are all about gadgets connected to tech, e-scooters are no different. The products like TVS iQube offer touchscreen TFT display & Bluetooth connectivity. Meanwhile, low-speed scooters like Okinawa R30 only offer a basic digital display. However, some companies have started to offer Bluetooth connectivity on low-speed e-scooters as well. Additionally, it is the cost difference that separates both the scooter types. While the low-speed scooters range from around Rs 50-60k, the high-speed e-scooters start at Rs 80,000 or more. Hence, low-speed scooters make sense for budget-oriented buyers. Meanwhile, high-speed scooters are preferred by premium customers.

Verdict

If you're looking for a short-distance commute e-scooter; the low-speed electric scooters make sense. However, if your usage is high then the high-speed e-scooters make more sense. Let us know in the comments which one will you pick & why.
