TVS Overview
The company's history began in 1911 with T. V. Sundaram Iyengar initiating Madurai's first bus service and founded TVS as a transportation company known as Southern Roadways. Sundaram Clayton, a subsidiary, was established in 1962 in collaboration with Clayton Dewandre Holdings, UK, producing various automotive components. The company expanded into mopeds in 1976, launching the iconic TVS 50 in 1980, India's first two-seater moped. It was the year of 1987 when TVS joined hands with Suzuki to enter the motorcycle manufacturing space
TVS-Suzuki introduced models like the Suzuki Supra, Samurai, Shogun, and Shaolin to the Indian market. In 2001, TVS and Suzuki parted ways leading to the rebranding as TVS Motor. While both companies went separate ways, it made TVS fully capable of chalking out its own road map. Recent achievements include launching the flagship TVS Apache RR 310 and entering the Dakar Rally, one of the world's toughest competitions, in collaboration with French motorcycle maker Sherco. In 2020, TVS acquired Norton Motorcycle Company, expanding its footprint even further in the biking space. With the TVS Apache being one of the most important bikes for TVS, it enjoys a loyal fanbase even today, with even some police forces using it as a nimble patrolling vehicle. While it takes care of its own production line-up, that is not all. BMW has partnered with TVS, after which TVS Motors manufactures bikes for BMW like the BMW G 310 R.
