The TVS XL 100 is exactly what you would expect from a moped. The XL 100 looks exactly the same as the XL50 that was sold in the 80s. However, it does have few modern touches here and there. The XL 100 gets LED DRLs up front that gives it a much more modern appeal but that is the only change in styling. Apart from the new body graphics and the better-cushioned seats, there is not much to boast about in terms of design.
Even though the XL looks quite outdated, it is built with practicality in mind. The XL 100 gets a long footboard in between to carry luggage. It also has a storage space located near the footboard to store small items. The vehicle also gets a detachable rear seat to carry heavy luggage, after all, it's a heavy-duty vehicle.
The XL also gets a durable metal body that can withstand the test of time. In addition to this, the vehicle gets ergonomically designed handlebars that provide comfort and better riding posture. At the rear, it houses a box-shaped tail lamp and consists of a classic looking body coloured fender. As for the colours, the XL 100 comes in two different paint schemes-green and black.
Alloy wheels and a new headlamp design could have made the TVS XL 100 more appealing. However, the seats are well cushioned and comfortable.
The TVS XL 100 measures 1895 mm in length, 670 mm in width and it stands 1077 mm tall. The moped has a wheelbase of 1228 mm. It has a 158 mm ground clearance which is quite decent. The new TVS XL 100 has a kerb weight of 88 kgs and the fuel tank capacity of this gearless moped is 4 litres. The XL 100 has a load-carrying capacity of 130 kg which is impressive considering the size of the moped.
The XL 100 has decent ground clearance and load-carrying capacity considering the fact that it is a moped. However, when there is luggage or load, the exhaust tends to rub against the tarmac when the rider encounters a speed bump. The vehicle weighs just 88kgs so handling it would be a breeze.
The TVS XL 100 is powered by a BS6-compliant 99.7cc single-cylinder air-cooled engine that is equipped with EcoThrust Fuel Injection technology. The motor churns out a maximum power of 4.3 PS at 6000 rpm in collaboration with a peak torque of 6.5 Nm at 3500 rpm. The 99.7cc engine is quite responsive and provides great initial pick-up. It also offers decent performance for city commutes and also has the capacity to carry loads of up to 130 kg.
The BS6 engine of the XL 100 is also smooth and refined. It now gets a fuel-injection system which has significantly made the engine feel smoother and more refined than before. Also, in the low and mid-range revs, the engine is quick to respond, too. The vehicle provides a decent fuel efficiency figure of 67 kmpl. The fuel injection technology plays an important role here as it not only improves fuel economy but also the power delivery.
The scooter also performs well on rough patches thanks to its robust suspension setup. The claimed top speed is around 60 km/hr and considering the tiny 4-litre tank, the vehicle does provide a decent total range of around 230 km.
The TVS XL 100 offers good performance with a strong pick-up. The moped is also quite fuel-efficient and manages to deliver around 55-67 kmpl of mileage in real-world riding conditions.
The suspension setup of the XL100 BS6 is the same as the BS4-model, which is something that we’re happy about as this moped continues to offer a very comfortable ride. It gets telescopic hydraulic spring-type suspension in the front and a swing arm with hydraulic shocks at the rear. The suspension setup on the XL 100 does provide stability and comfort even while riding on the bad sections of roads.
As for the brakes, the XL 100 comes equipped with drum brakes of the size 110 mm on the front and the rear. The drum brakes provide decent feedback and bite and are efficient considering the weight and power of the moped.
The TVS XL 100 gets tube fitted tyres in the front and rear. The radial tyres of the XL 100 are sized 2.5-16. These tyres provide good resistance against aquaplaning and should ensure a good amount of grip on bad sections of the road. They also have a good load-carrying capacity. In addition to this, the XL 100 is equipped with puncture-resistant dura grip tyres that are durable and long-lasting.
The TVS XL 100 offers a good ride quality and strong brake, thereby making it a robust vehicle that comes at an affordable price.
