Maruti S-Cross Petrol Vs Renault Duster - Spec Comparison

Maruti Suzuki S-Cross sits on the top shelf of the brand's portfolio but it was discontinued after the BS6 norms came in. Now just like the Vitara Brezza, Maruti will replace the diesel engine with a petrol engine and it is going to launch soon this month. The Duster has also dropped the popular K9K diesel engine and carries sole 1.5-litre petrol engine. Just to give you an idea of both the cars, we have come up with a spec comparison of Maruti S-Cross Vs Renault Duster.

Maruti S-Cross Vs Renault Duster - Design and Dimensions

The Maruti S-Cross will be similar to the diesel S-Cross. Maruti will change nothing in terms of exterior design and dimensions will be similar too. The S-Cross got a facelift in 2017 and it carried some big changes all around. The front gets a bold chrome grille accompanied by HID projector headlights whereas the rear gets LED taillights and skid plates. The S-Cross will also get dual-tone alloy wheels and roof rails.

Talking about the Renault Duster, it is all very familiar. Renault has not launched the second generation of the Duster sold globally. We still get the first generation which has been refreshed with multiple facelifts. The current Duster gets chrome grille, projector headlamps with DRLs, skid plates and LED taillights. Between the two, the Duster seems more macho thanks to the flared wheel arches and better approach and departure angles.

Length 4300mm4360mm
Width1785mm1822mm
Height1595mm1695mm
Wheelbase2600mm2673mm
Ground ClearanceNA205mm

As you can see in the table above, the Duster is bigger in every dimension. Be it the height, width or wheelbase, it excels in every department. Maruti hasn't mentioned the ground clearance of the S-Cross but the Duster has a ground clearance of 205mm. The design department is subjective but in my opinion, the S-Cross feels better in terms of looks. But the Duster is obvious if you want bigger and masculine proportions.

Maruti S-Cross Vs Renault Duster - Features and Interiors

The Maruti S-Cross is a feature-packed car from the Japanese marque and offers some good features. The interior of the S-Cross is better than that of the Duster. The interior of the Duster feels very aged and unpolished and it surely needs a revamp. Talking about the features, the S-Cross offers smart play studio system with Android Auto and Apple Car Play, automatic climate control, steering mounted controls, adjustable headrests, cruise control, tilt & telescopic steering, engine start/stop button etc.

Renault Duster is also a fairly equipped car but you feel its age as it doesn't offer keyless entry and go. The positioning of the touchscreen is also not very ergonomic and the volume and Bluetooth controls are placed behind the steering which is a tough find. Talking about the features, the Duster offers touchscreen infotainment with Android Auto and Apple Car Play, cruise control, auto AC, height-adjustable seatbelts etc. On the spec sheets, the S-Cross wins here and it also offers better-looking interiors.

Maruti S-Cross Vs Renault Duster - Engine and Performance

The Maruti S-Cross will come with a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine which churns out 105 PS and 138 Nm of torque, mated with a 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic gearbox. It is still unknown whether Maruti will give smart hybrid tech with automatic only or with both. The bookings of the S-Cross are already open and one can book from any Nexa dealership.

The Duster currently only gets a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine which churns out 106 PS and 142 Nm of torque mated with a sole manual transmission. Renault used to offer CVT as well but that now has been discontinued. A more powerful 1.3-litre turbo petrol Duster was showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo but the launch of that is still unknown.

Maruti is about to launch the S-Cross petrol and may announce the prices this month itself. The S-Cross petrol will be priced a little cheaper than the S-Cross diesel sold before BS6 emission norms came in. Talking about the Duster, it is offered in three variants: RXE at Rs 8.49 lakhs, RXS at Rs 8.29 lakhs and RXZ at Rs 9.99 lakhs ex-showroom. We shall wait for the prices of the S-Cross before giving the verdict of this comparison.
