The Ministry of Road Transport recently announced new vintage cars registration rule in the country. With these new set of laws coming into action, the owners of the vintage vehicles will be able to register their cars with ease and the classic cars will also get special format registration plates. Having said that, the government says that the new law will only be valid for vehicles which are at least 50 years older than the original date of registration. Read on to know more details about the new rule.
As per the new rules, the owners of vintage vehicles can get a new certificate issued for the registration of the vintage vehicle. This will cost the owner Rs 20,000 per vehicle and the certificate will be valid for a maximum period of 10 years after which the owner will have to get the vehicle registered again. Renewal cost of the registration certificate will be an additional INR 5,000. The vintage vehicles will also get new plates with VA lettering to differentiate them from the ordinary.

As per the new format, the registration plates of the vintage vehicles with have a 10-digit alphanumeric format which will be in the form of 'XX VA YY ****' where XX will stand for the state code, VA stands for vintage vehicle, YY will be a two-letter series while **** will be a four-digit number. The four-digit number will be allocated by the respective registering authority. Just like normal cars and two-wheelers, these vintage vehicles will have HSRP plates with black letters and white background.
However, it is worth noting that the vehicles which are in their original forms and do not have any modification to the chassis, body shell, and the engine will be getting a new registration. Moreover, vintage vehicles will have a number of restrictions and can only be used on the Indian roads for display, technical research, or taking part in a vintage car rally, refuelling and maintenance, exhibitions and vintage rallies.
