Toyota Hilux Variants Explained: Pick The Right One For Your Needs

Toyota has finally taken the covers off the updated 2026 Hilux. Now in its ninth generation, the lifestyle pickup brings noticeable upgrades, including cosmetic changes and added features. Alongside that, there's a new 4x2 option, making it more accessible than before. It is introduced at a starting price of Rs 32 lakh (ex-showroom), with the lineup spread across three variants: GX 4x2, GX 4x4 and VX 4x4, all offered with an automatic gearbox. Beyond the mechanical differences, there's a fair bit that changes on the feature and safety front too. If you're planning to buy the new Hilux and are confused about which variant to pick, this article will help make that decision easy. It also covers the most value for money trim, to find that, scroll down.

Price- 31.99 Lakh (ex-showroom)

The GX 4x2 is the new entry point into the Hilux lineup, also the highlight of the new Hilux as this is the trim that is responsible for bringing the price down by a good margin. It skips the four-wheel-drive hardware altogether and sticks to a rear-wheel-drive setup, but Toyota has ensured the package still feels complete and well-rounded. You still get the full 7 airbags, VSC with brake assist and ABS as standard, along with the 8-inch touchscreen, LED front fog lamps and alloy wheels. What you don't get is the fancier stuff like a panoramic view monitor, TPMS or the bigger 12.3-inch display. Additionally, this variant comes in four different coloure palate that includes Super White, Ash, Emotional Red or Platinum Pearl White Metallic. For buyers who want the size, road presence and pickup lifestyle without ever planning to go off-road, this is the one that makes sense

Price- 33.69 Lakh (ex-showroom)

Now this is the point where Toyota adds the part that actually makes the Hilux an off roader: four-wheel drive with High and Low range. Not only that this trim also unlocks the proper off-road toolkit, Electronic Differential Lock, Downhill Assist Control, Multi-Terrain Select and Electronic Drive Control, none of which are available on the 4x2. On the feature front things are quite similar to the GX 4x2, same 8-inch screen, same 4 speakers, same all-black cabin. As for the price it will cost you 1.7 lakh more and against that it will unlock genuine off-road capability, not creature comforts. Colour options stay the same as the GX 4x2, this is the variant for buyers who actually intend to take the Hilux off the beaten path without stretching the budget to the VX.

VX 4x4 AT

Toyota Hilux

Powertrain- 2.8-litre Diesel AT- 4X4
Price- 36.69 Lakh (ex-showroom)

The range topping variant VX 4x4 AT the point where the Hilux stops feeling like a workhorse and starts feeling properly a premium lifestyle SUV. This is the only variant to get the 12.3-inch touchscreen paired with a TFT instrument cluster, an 8-speaker audio setup and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It's also the only trim with a panoramic view monitor, TPMS and smart entry with push-button start, along with drive modes, cruise control and a wireless charger. On the outside, it picks up premium LED headlamps with a welcome function, retractable ORVMs and a sharkfin antenna. Along with the four regular shades, the VX also opens up Sulphur Metallic and Attitude Black, so if those are the colours you want, this is the only variant that gets you there. If budget isn't the primary concern, this is the Hilux to have.

Value for Money Variant

With the Hilux, the question isn't really about stretching the budget, it's about what you actually plan to do with it. If daily driving and occasional weekend trips are all you need, the GX 4x2 already gives you the size, the road presence and the safety kit without any off-road hardware you'll likely never use. But if venturing off tarmac, trails, riverbeds, loose gravel, is part of the plan, the GX 4x4 is the one to look at. It brings the full 4WD toolkit, diff lock, low range and multi-terrain select, at a price that still leaves the VX firmly in aspirational territory. And if you want the Hilux to also feel premium inside, with the bigger screen, wireless charging and the extra creature comforts, the VX 4x4 rounds off the range properly. However, if you had to pick the value for money variant in the lineup, the GX 4x4 makes the strongest case, real off-road capability without paying VX money.

Why Not the Other Variants?

  • GX 4x2: Makes sense if 4x4 genuinely isn't a priority, but it does miss out on the low-range gearbox and off-road electronics that are core to the Hilux's identity.
  • VX 4x4: The best-equipped Hilux by far, but buyers focused purely on off-road capability will find the GX 4x4 gets them there for noticeably less money.
