Toyota HiLux Pickup Is Being Considered For India

Toyota has some legendary SUVs and trucks around the globe. But India never got to taste all of them in their full glory. Many enthusiasts were upset as Toyota was rolling out rebadged Suzuki cars. Some good news is rolling in for the rejoice of fellow enthusiasts. A week ago, we heard that Toyota is considering the RAV4 for the Indian market and it is quite popular in the European markets. According to a new report, Toyota is considering the HiLux pickup truck for India and it will be priced between 15 - 20 lakh ex-showroom.

If we talk pickup trucks, lifestyle pickups, in particular, we only have the Isuzu V-Cross. That too is due for a BS6 update whereas global markets have already received the 2020MY V-Cross. To reignite the lifestyle pickup segment, Toyota is seriously considering the HiLux for the Indian market. And unlike the RAV4, it won't cost a bomb. Part sharing will play a big role in the pricing of the HiLux as it sits on Fortuner's and Crysta's platform and also gets the same engines.

The HiLux is underpinned by the IMV-2 platform which also underpins the Fortuner and Innova Crysta. Even the ladder on frame chassis, interior design and some suspension components are similar to that of the Fortuner. Given both the Fortuner and Innova Crysta are made in India, keeping the costs low and giving an affordable package won't be a task for Toyota. Toyota HiLux gets 2.4-litre and 2.8-litre diesel engines, however, the tuning and calibration is more inclined towards offroading. Unlike the Fortuner, the HiLux gets leaf springs at the rear for heavy duties.

The 2.8-litre diesel engine produces over 500 Nm of torque and close to 204 PS. The first three gears of the HiLux are shorter and the engines are also tuned to produce higher torque at lower RPMs. The 2.8-litre diesel is available with a 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic. With the new update, Toyota HiLux gets a new grille and tweaked bumpers. The interiors of the HiLux also sports a similar design to the Fortuner. The centre of the dashboard gets an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple Car Play.

Toyota will capture a big amount of audience with the HiLux in India. It will not only fill the void of the V-Cross but also attract a chunk of the youthful audience with its versatility. It is longer and more capable than the Fortuner and other SUVs of its category. Toyota is aiming a base price of Rs 15 lakh for the HiLux in India whereas top trims will fetch till 20 lakh price range.
