Should I buy the Splendor Plus?
The Hero Splendor Plus is a very old bike in the Indian market. It makes sense to the customers who want a dependable & reliable commuter bike for everyday use. Its engine has good mid-range which means that you can easily ride it with pillion inside the city. Also, the good fuel economy of upwards 60 kmpl means less monthly fuel expenses. The best part is that it can be fixed anywhere in India with a roadside mechanic. Its parts are easily available & the resale of it is the best in the segment. The only negative is the lack of disc brake at the front & less performance on the highway. You should consider it if you want a practical, fuel-efficient bike. You will use it for many years.
- Splendor Plus is widely known for its reliable engine. The 97.2cc, single-cylinder engine on it makes a decent power of 7.9 bhp. This engine generates a good mix of low-end torque and mid-range power. It comes with a 4-speed gearbox which helps the rider to get good mix of fuel economy of upwards 60 kmpl as well as performance.
- This engine has a very good low-end torque. Riding it inside the city with pillion or luggage is very comfortable due to the good tuning of the engine. You can easily lift the bike from standstill without using the half-clutch method. Also, the good mid-range means the riding it on open roads is also stress free. This engine remains cool & hence overheating after a long use is also not an issue.
- The main positive of this engine is its easy to repair nature. It can be fixed anywhere in India by any roadside mechanic. Also, Hero’s strong aftersales service makes the original parts available pan India even among the roadside mechanics. The cost of parts is also very less and hence anyone can easily maintain the Splendor Plus for years.
- The only negative of this engine is its lack of peak performance. It is a square engine which means that the top-end power is less. Also, due to the design of this engine, there are vibrations felt while riding it hard. If you’re riding it easily, this engine doesn’t vibrate much. But, riding it fast creates vibrations.
Splendor Plus engine specifications:
| Transmission | Manual |
| Mileage | 60-80.6 |
| Engine | 97.2 cc |
- The Splendor Plus is fitted with a telescopic front suspension & spring shockers at the rear. The ride quality of it is tuned as per the Indian roads. It is neither too soft & nor stiff. One can easily & confidently ride it on the rough roads of rural areas or broken roads. Also, if you’re riding it with a pillion or luggage, the suspension remains comfortable. The rear suspension can feel a bit tight if you’re riding it solo over the broken roads but it is not uncomfortable.
- The riding position of the Splendor Plus is also designed for comfort. You can easily sit on it for long hours and ride it continuously without getting tired. The footpegs are positioned in a way that your legs remain comfortable while the handlebar is set towards the rider. This combination makes for a very comfortable riding experience, especially, inside the city.
- The design of the Splendor Plus is very old now. It looks quite boring on the road because Hero hasn’t changed much on it for decades. The square headlight, the headlight cowl, & the square taillight; are all the same as the old Splendor bikes. So, if you want a young looking or more appealing bike, we guess you should look for rivals. But, due to this iconic old design, the aftersales of the Splendor Plus is very good in the second hand bike market.
- The size & dimensions of the Splendor Plus are slim & light. As it is a city commuter bike, it is designed in a way that you can use it easily inside the tight city roads. Even in bumper-to-bumper traffic, you can easily filter the traffic due to its slim design. All thanks to the confident riding position, rider can take the short cuts easily with it while commuting through the traffic. Although, it isn’t an eye candy on the road, it looks decent for a family commuter bike.
Splendor Plus body specifications:
| Ground Clearance | 165 mm |

- In terms of specs, the Splendor Plus comes loaded with a telescopic suspension at the front, shockers at the rear. Also, the brakes offered on it are only drum & there is no option for a disc brake. In our tests, we’ve found that the emergency braking on the Splendor Plus is tricky. As the drum brakes on it do not offer a very strong bite, it can easily get out of hands if you’re riding it fast. But, inside the city speeds, the braking is decent. It also it’s a combined braking system which helps in city riding.
- Feature-wise, Hero doesn’t offer much on the Splendor Plus. It gets a simple analogue instrument console which shows speed, fuel gauge, & odometer. There are no special features like a semi-digital screen or a USB phone charging option. If you want those, you’ll have to spend more money & buy the Xtec version of the Splendor.
