KTM RC 390 Detailed Review

  • Looks and Colour Options

KTM RC 390 BS6 has a distinctive design language. It comes with an aggressive design and has a sharp-looking character that gives it a sporty stance. The RC 390 comes with a sporty touch in terms of design and has a dynamic appearance. The motorcycle has sharper contours across the body that make it look pretty stylish.

At the front, the RC 200 gets twin LED projector headlamps and DRLs with a winglet-type design that add to the premium look and aggressive character of the vehicle. The motorcycle also gets a neat looking clear visor/windshield along with the sharp cycle parts. In addition to this, the motorcycle gets low clip-on handlebars and a raked-up rear subframe that adds to the sportiness.

Apart from the aforementioned characteristics, the RC 390 rolls out of the factory floor with an edgy and aerodynamically designed fairing. The motorcycle also gets graphics on the fairing and tail section which boosts the design’s efficacy intended by the brand. Also, it gets a triple-tone treatment on the body and alloy wheels finished in KTM's signature orange colour. However, the orange alloy wheels are now only provided with the Metallic Silver coloured body. At the rear, the motorcycle gets ultra-stylish LED tail lamps too. Finally, to add on to the design quotient, the RC 390 comes in two different colour schemes that customers can choose from-Metallic Silver and Ceramic White.

    Summary

The new KTM RC 390 looks uber-cool and has a good road presence. The RC 390 is available in two different paint schemes that give the motorcycle a killer look- Metallic Silver and Ceramic White.

  • Dimensions and Capacity

The new KTM RC 390 measures 2,145 mm in length, 760 mm in width and 830 mm in height. The motorcycle has a wheelbase of 1,340 mm and it gets a seat height of 835 mm. The fuel tank capacity of the motorcycle is quite less when compared to its rivals. The bike only gets 9.5 Litres of tank capacity. The new KTM RC 390 BS6 is quite heavy too as the motorcycle weighs around 170 kilograms. Apart from these, the motorcycle does a decent job in terms of performance and glides over speed bumps without scraping the underbody thanks to the 178 mm of ground clearance it has on offer.

    Summary

The new KTM RC 200 has a good ride height, however, the seat height is on the higher side. The fuel tank capacity seems to limit the motorcycle performance to go the distance without worrying about how much fuel is left in the tank.

  • Engine Performance and Mileage

The KTM RC 390 is powered by a BS6-compliant 373.2cc, DOHC, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected engine that is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. The motor churns out 43.5 PS maximum power at 9000 RPM and 36 Nm of peak torque at 7000 RPM. The 373.2cc engine is quite responsive and provides great initial pick-up. It also offers decent performance for city commutes. The BS6 engine of the RC 390 is also smooth and refined. It gets a fuel-injection system that significantly makes the engine feel smoother and refined. Also, in the low and mid-range revs, the engine is quick to respond. The new KTM RC 390 BS6 is one of the most powerful 400cc motorcycles currently on sale in the Indian market.

The KTM RC 390 also offers good initial acceleration. The motorcycle feels peppy to ride inside the city limits and it offers good mid-range punch too. On highways, the motorcycle performs extremely well and helps attain staggering speeds of up to 170kmph effortlessly. As for fuel efficiency, the bike manages to deliver around 23-26 kmpl in real-world conditions. The fuel injection technology plays an important role here as it not only improves fuel economy but also the power delivery.

The motorcycle also handles extremely well. It has a robust suspension setup that allows the rider to manoeuvre the bike easily. However, the suspension is set up on the stiffer side and could cause discomfort to the rider.

    Summary

The KTM RC 390 is a ready-to-race machine that performs well in cities as well as on highways. The vehicle provides decent comfort on highways but not on bumpy sections of the road.

  • Tyres, Brakes and Features

The KTM RC 390 is based on a powder-coated steel trellis frame. The suspension duties are performed by 43 mm WP APEX upside-down (USD) forks at the front with 125 mm travel and a mono-shock absorber at the rear with 150 mm travel. The suspension is on the stiffer side as a result of which rides could become bumpy. The motorcycle is good for 40-80km rides but beyond that, the rider would feel discomfort due to the setup. For braking duties, it gets disc brakes at both ends. At the front, it gets a 320 mm four-piston radial fixed calliper brake disc while at the rear, it gets a 230 mm single-piston floating calliper brake disc unit. The front brake is known for its impressive feedback and bite. The rear disc brake does not disappoint either. In addition to this, the RC 390 is offered with a dual-channel ABS that has a switchable function.

As for the tyres, the RC 390 runs on 17-inch tubeless tyres. The front tyre measures 110/70-17 while the rear one is a 150/60 section 17-inch unit. These tyres provide good resistance against aquaplaning and should ensure a good amount of grip on bad sections of the road.

The RC 390 is also equipped with a decent amount of features like an all-digital instrument cluster loaded with details like real-time fuel efficiency, average speed, gear position indicator, shift light and the regular data. Apart from these, the motorcycle gets, twin projector headlights, with indicators, taillight and DRLs being LED units.

    Summary

The new KTM RC 390 BS6 gets premium hardware components. It is based on a trellis frame, gets USD forks, a mono-shock absorber and large disc brakes at either end with a disengageable dual-channel ABS. It is quite feature-loaded too and gets an all-digital instrument cluster.
