Mahindra XUV 300 Expert Verdict

Mahindra XUV 300 Detailed Review

  • XUV300 Performance

Mahindra XUV300 is available with two engine options - a 1.2L turbocharged petrol unit and a 1.5L diesel engine. The diesel engine gets the most torque as compared to other sub-compact SUVs in India. The 1,497cc diesel engine produces 115 bhp of power and 300 Nm of peak torque. The 1,198cc petrol motor produces 108.6 bhp of power and 200 Nm of peak torque. Both these engine options are available with a 6-speed manual as standard and optional 6-speed AMT unit. The petrol motor has great refinement levels at idling but gets a bit too vocal when pushed hard. Although the 1.5-litre four-cylinder diesel engine is same as seen on the Marazzo, the brand has made some changes to suit the character of the SUV.

    Mahindra XUV 300

One of the best units in the class, the AMT unit for the XUV300 is made by Magneti Marelli. When you're in a rush, there is a sizable amount of lag between gear shifts, but we have grown to anticipate it from all automatic manual transmissions. However, one never has any complaints about the overall performance because of the three-pot turbo-petrol engine's great performance. The turbo starts to spool up at 1500 RPM and makes driving enjoyable. The diesel manual's ARAI-certified fuel economy is 20 kilometres per litre. Only the clutch-free driving is different when operating the diesel AMT. In bumper-to-bumper traffic, the creep function is incredibly helpful, and it works well even on highways.

    Summary

Both the engine variants of the Mahindra XUV300 offer a strong performance irrespective of the transmission option you choose. Furthermore, the high fuel efficiency of the diesel version makes it a good choice for those with a high usage.

  • XUV300 Exterior

Mahindra XUV300 is a stylish and mean-looking compact SUV that looks eye-catching on the roads. Although it has a similar design to the Ssangyong Tivoli, there are some significant differences. The intimidating front design is further enhanced by the vertical LED daytime running lights. The chrome grille and the sleek headlight design work nicely together to complete the look. The false skid plate and the four-slat chrome strips just about finish the front fascia as we move downward. Additionally, the latter enhances the SUV's sportiness.

    Mahindra XUV 300

The XUV 300 flaunts 16-inch machine-cut dual-tone alloy wheels with a 205/65 R16 profile on the side. All variants have the same tyre size and profile, however, the lower trims come with steel wheels. Mahindra had to reduce the Tivoli's size to fit it into the 4-meter overall length category, but that can be overlooked given how commanding the XUV300 is on the road as a whole. The large LED taillights are attractive when lit up. There are six monochromatic and two dual-tone colour options for the XUV300. Red Rage, Pearl White, Napoli Black, D'sat Silver, Aqua Marine, and Galaxy Grey are among the monochromatic colour shades. The dual-tone options are Red Rage with Pearl White and Aqua Marine with Pearl White.

The Mahindra XUV300 measures 3,995 mm in length, 1,821 mm in width, and 1,627 mm in height. The SUV can readily handle the rough Indian roads because to its 2,600 mm wheelbase and 180 mm ground clearance. It also has lots of interior space but the boot space can be a turn-off for some people.

    Summary

Mahindra XUV300 impresses with a rather sporty design that has some elements inspired from the bigger XUV500.

  • XUV300 Interior

The Mahindra XUV300's interior is pleasant and attractively premium. The dual-tone colour scheme opens up the cabin and gives it a high-end appearance. The interior's light colour scheme is undoubtedly a dirt magnet, though. The lighter colour is also used on the leatherette seats, creating the impression that you are riding in a car from a higher segment.  The 8.0-inch touchscreen offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as connectivity features. Feature-wise, the XUV300 is offered with bits like cruise control, push-button start/stop, power-folding ORVMs, electrically adjustable sunroof, projector headlights with LED daytime running lights, automatic headlights with follow me home function, steering mounted controls and much more.

    Mahindra XUV 300

Visibility from the driver’s seat is good and you get a clear view of the road ahead. The seats are cushioned properly and have a decent amount of side bolstering. It is because of the added cushioning that the long journeys will be comfortable as the seats provide adequate support to the occupant. You also get a leather-wrapped steering wheel for a good grip. The steering wheel, which is adorned with gunmetal grey switchgear, has a stylish design. The straightforward instrument cluster is simple to see, and the display controls are located between them.

Three average-sized adults may sit easily in the rear seats, which are very comfy due to the width of the SUV. The headroom and under-thigh support are both adequate. The doors open widely for convenient entry and exit, and the chairs are at a comfortable height. Long distance travellers may find the XUV300's boot space to be a problem because it is not the largest in the segment. While one may pack a lot of bags here, it is undoubtedly not the most roomy option when compared to the competition.

    Summary

The ingress and egress in the XUV300 are easy thus making it better suited for old age people. The cabin offers a two-tone colour theme that makes the cabin sufficiently upmarket.

  • XUV300 Ride & Handling

The Mahindra XUV300 boasts excellent handling and ride qualities. The suspension arrangement is calibrated to deliver a comfortable ride over rough terrain and easily absorbs all the undulations. The SUV does not seem uneasy at all when travelling at highway speeds thanks to the composed ride. The Mahindra XUV300 feels assured and is a pleasant SUV to drive around curves.

The Mahindra XUV300's steering can be adjusted in three distinct modes: Normal, Comfort, and Sports. Both the standard and the Comfort modes work nicely for city driving. However, as soon as you switch to the normal mode, the steering starts to feel a little heavier. Only when you switch to Sport mode will the steering wheel provide you excellent input and balance as the manufacturer intended. The sport option definitely empowers the driver to push hard in bends, but at city speeds, you can continue with the Normal setting.

    Mahindra XUV 300

    Summary

The Mahindra XUV300 offers a comfortable ride and is even quite fun around the corners. The suspension setup absorbs most of the bumps while the multiple settings of the steering wheel let you choose exactly how you want the SUV to perform.

  • XUV300 Safety

The Mahindra XUV300 received a rating of five stars for adult safety and four stars for child safety from the Global NCAP. The footwell region and structure of the XUV300 were said to have been stable during the collision. The front passenger's head, neck, knee, and chest protection was rated as acceptable and sufficient by the driver. This test also shown that the XUV300 has the highest side-impact crashworthiness performance and the lowest amount of intrusion of any model to date. The XUV300 received a total score of 16.42 out of 17 for adult protection and 34.44 out of 49 for child safety protection.

The XUV300 has disc brakes on all four wheels, two front airbags, ISOFIX mounts, ABS with EBD, Cornering Brake Control, and three-point seat belts for every occupant as standard safety features. In addition to ESP-based safety features like traction control, roll-over avoidance, brake fade compensation, and hill-start assist, the top-end model come with seven airbags, including a knee airbag for the driver. Front and rear parking sensors, as well as a rear parking camera, are additional safety measures.

    Mahindra XUV 300

    Summary

Mahindra XUV300 is an all-rounder when it comes to safety features. It is the safest compact SUV that boasts as many as 7 airbags.
