Hero MotoCorp is finally ready to move beyond scooters in the electric space. The company has officially confirmed that its first electric motorcycles will hit the market in 2027, marking a major expansion of the Vida lineup into a segment that remains largely untapped in India.

Why This Matters for Hero

India's electric two-wheeler market has been growing steadily, but most of that growth has been concentrated in the scooter category, where brands like Ola, TVS, Bajaj, and Ather are locked in fierce competition. Electric motorcycles, on the other hand, have seen very little serious action from mainstream manufacturers. That gap gives Hero a genuine first-mover opportunity, and the company appears to be positioning itself to seize it before rivals catch up.
Official Confirmation

Hero had already tipped its hand earlier by filing design patents for two motorcycles, internally referred to as UBEX and VXZ. Now, the company's leadership has gone on record with a firmer timeline. Kausalya Nandakumar, who heads Hero MotoCorp's Emerging Mobility Business Unit as Chief Business Officer, stated that the brand's electric motorcycle range will begin arriving from next year onward. It isn't yet locked in whether both bikes will launch simultaneously in 2027 or whether one will lead the charge before the other follows.
Adding weight to the announcement, Hero MotoCorp CEO Harshavardhan Chitale also acknowledged that development on the electric motorcycle front is moving along steadily, with more specifics expected to be shared as the launch window approaches.
Built From the Ground Up, Not Borrowed From Vida Scooters
One of the more telling details to emerge is that these motorcycles won't simply be scooter platforms wearing a different body. According to Nandakumar, UBEX and VXZ will run on dedicated motorcycle platforms engineered specifically for two-wheeler dynamics — covering areas like ride quality, performance delivery, range efficiency, and hill-climbing ability. That said, Hero isn't throwing away everything it has learned from the Vida scooter program; relevant engineering insights from that platform are expected to feed into the new motorcycles wherever applicable.
What We Know About UBEX So Far

Design patent filings give us a fairly clear picture of the UBEX. It's shaping up to be a street-fighter-style electric motorcycle with a bold, muscular stance. Some standout visual elements include:
- A single-pod projector headlamp
- LED daytime running lights positioned up top
- A sculpted tank-like panel despite being electric
- An exposed frame that adds to its lean, athletic look
- Telescopic forks up front paired with alloy wheels
- A single-seat layout, rear tyre hugger, and petal-style disc brakes on both wheels
Despite its sporty aesthetic, early indications suggest the riding posture will lean toward comfort rather than an aggressive crouch. On the tech side, expect a TFT display bundled with connected-ride features such as turn-by-turn navigation. The motorcycle is also tipped to carry a sizeable fixed battery pack, which could translate into a longer range than what today's electric scooters typically offer.
What We Know About VXZ So Far

The VXZ carries an interesting backstory - its name is widely believed to combine "VIDA" and "Zero," hinting at Hero's ongoing partnership with American EV motorcycle maker Zero Motorcycles. Interestingly though, patent drawings suggest this isn't a rebadged Zero product; it's built on an entirely new platform of its own, likely tailored to Indian road conditions and cost expectations.
Design-wise, the VXZ leans into a sharper, more aggressive character:
- A pointed front fascia with a sharp LED headlight
- Upside-down front forks
- Petal disc brakes at both ends
- Belt-driven rear wheel
- Partial fairing for a semi-sporty look
- Split seating, a rectangular digital instrument panel, rear monoshock, and a large centrally placed fixed battery
Overall, the VXZ seems aimed at buyers who want a performance-flavoured streetfighter with just a hint of sportbike DNA.
The Bigger Picture: Vida's Growing Footprint
These upcoming motorcycles aren't happening in isolation - they're part of a broader push by Hero to grow its footprint in electric mobility. The Vida scooter range currently holds north of 11% market share and ranks as Hero's fourth best-selling product overall, with momentum building further after the VX2 lineup and the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) program were introduced.
To keep up with rising demand, Hero is also scaling up manufacturing. Monthly Vida production capacity, which stood at around 15,000 units by the close of FY26, is set to be ramped up to as much as 45,000 units per month during FY27 - a threefold jump that signals just how seriously the company is betting on electric two-wheelers going forward.

Bottom Line
With patents already filed, leadership publicly committing to a 2027 timeline, and production capacity being scaled up in parallel, Hero's entry into electric motorcycles looks like more than just a concept-stage ambition. If UBEX and VXZ deliver on what their design filings suggest, Hero could end up being one of the first mainstream Indian manufacturers to seriously contest the electric motorcycle space - a segment that, until now, has had the field largely to itself.
